Advertising & Cookie Notice

We use Cookies, pixels, mobile Software Development Kits (SDKs), and other tracking technologies (collectively “Cookies”) on all RBC websites and Mobile apps under Royal Bank of Canada and its affiliated entities (collectively “websites”) to customize your experience. This may include tailoring the information presented to you about products or services that are best suited to you, offer special promotions, and to better understand how visitors interact with our websites in order to make improvements.

Understanding Cookies

A cookie is a small data file that our website sends to your web browser which allows us to recognize you as a user when you return to the Website using the same computer and web browser, either for the duration of your visit (using a ‘session cookie’) or for repeat visits (a ‘persistent cookie’). Other similar files such as clear GIFs, web beacons and pixel tags work in the same way and we use the word ‘cookie’ in this notice to refer to all files that collect information in this way.

Cookies cannot view or retrieve data from other Cookies, or capture files or information stored on your computer. Only the website that sends you Cookies can read them. Cookies are also not shared between devices; therefore, you will need to select your preferences on each device that you access a website on.

3 Main Principles Guiding our Use of Cookies

Consent

You will be asked to review and accept or decline the use of Cookies the first time you visit an RBC website, and on an annual basis thereafter, to ensure your consent is always up to date.

Transparency

We describe the Cookies we use including what information is being collected by each cookie as well as the purpose of the cookie.

Control

You can review and modify your Cookies preferences at any time by clicking on “Advertising & Cookies” at the bottom of every web page.

How We Use Cookies on Our Sites

RBC relies on Cookies, notably Google Analytics, and other commonly used technologies, to understand and improve your website experience as well as identify fraud or potential threats. Your choice not to accept these Cookies will not prohibit your use of our websites however it may affect your overall experience during your visit.

You can find out more about the type of information collected through Cookies, and what they’re used for, by expanding the categories outlined below:

Essential Cookies allow you to access all core site features and to browse in an optimal and secure manner.

These Cookies may:

  • Make the site easier to use
  • Authenticate and identify you
  • Prevent fraud
  • Improve site security

Performance Cookies allow us to analyze site activity in order to make improvements to our websites.

These Cookies may send non-identifiable (anonymous), and aggregated data to Google Analytics and similar technologies, to measure:

  • Visits and browsing activity on our sites
  • How visitors access our services
  • How long a visitor spends on a specific page

Personalization Cookies allow us to remember your preferences and personalize the content you see based on your browsing behaviour and previous choices selected – such as remembering your Client Card when signing into an online service.

These Cookies may:

  • Remember certain information when filling out a form
  • Help us understand what products or services may be of interest to you
  • Limit the number of times you see an ad

Advertising Cookies helps enable us to tailor the ads you receive, so that you see more of what you’re interested in.

These Cookies may:

  • Be set on our site by our advertising partners to show you personalized offers and services
  • Help us to analyze and improve the effectiveness of our campaigns.
  • Collect information such as page or product application visits, browsing habits, interaction with our advertising, or time spent on a site page.

Your Cookie preferences will be stored on a device for up to 12 months. After this time, you’ll be asked to select your preferences again. We’ll also ask to select your preferences any time you clear your Cookies from your browser. Settings are unique to each specific browser and device. Unlike other consents and preferences stored by RBC, Cookie settings are not stored by RBC and cannot be linked across multiple browsers or devices. Across Canada, RBC supports numerous websites. Where applicable, settings are shared. From time to time users may be asked to set new settings.

We do not sell your information to third parties, nor do we track your interaction with a third-party website.

Refer to our Digital Privacy Notice and Global Privacy Notice for more information on the collection, use and disclosure of your personal information.

Interest Based Advertising

We work with advertising companies that use tracking technologies (including Cookies and pixel tags) on our website and other websites or mobile apps, to provide you with tailored advertisements outside of RBC websites or mobile apps. This is a common marketing practice referred to as Interest Based Advertising.

These companies may collect information about your activity across your different devices while on our website, third-party websites, or mobile apps (such as web pages you visit and your interaction with our advertising and other communications). This information is then used to make predictions about your preferences, develop personalized content, and deliver tailored ads that are more relevant to you across websites that we advertise on. This information may also be used to evaluate the effectiveness of our advertising campaigns.

1
Your behaviour while on our website or Mobile app indicates a possible preference for traveling.
2
A signal is sent to indicate that you may be inclined to apply for an RBC Travel Credit Card.
3
You would then be provided with an offer for an RBC Travel Credit Card on a third-party social media website that we advertise on.
