Filling in the Map: Growth by Amalgamation

Royal charter, Quebec Bank, 1837
Granted by William IV "by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, King, Defender of Faith" in 1837. Attached by a red cord to the charter and measuring six inches in diameter and one inch in thickness is the heavy green wax seal of the King. Both seal and charter are stored in the wooden box illustrated.

Quebec Bank ballot box, c. 1838
Used in the boardroom of the Quebec Bank. The voter was given a small black ball and having inserted his hand in the circular hole in the front of the box, he dropped the ball into whichever of the two drawers (marked "yea" and "nay") suited his purpose. A tally was then taken.
