Legacy Light Fixture

The reception light fixture design is inspired by a territorial treaty between the Anishinaabe, Mississaugas and Haudenosaunee, which binds the Nations to share the territory and protect the land.

The treaty, which covered the region spanning the Greater Toronto Area, is called the Dish with One Spoon. Treaties are agreements or contracts focused on the relationship between Indigenous nations in the spirit of partnership, collaboration and sustainability. Treaties were communicated through important symbols, artwork, and oral storytelling, often presented using wampum belts that were held by well-respected leaders of each nation.

Wampum are tubular beads that were used among Indigenous people to thread into patterns on sashes, belts and smaller jewelry. Wampum belts served as representation for significant agreements, teachings and oral traditions that were passed down through generations.

The Dish with One Spoon treaty continues to be significant today as it stands for mutual respect and understanding between Indigenous peoples. It serves as an example of how communities can work together in harmony, mutual respect and protect the land for future generations.
