TORONTO, June 8, 2010 - Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) has received the first ever "Sustainability in Business Award" from SAP. The award was developed by SAP Canada Inc. and the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario to acknowledge the pioneering work of Canadian businesses in showing sustainability leadership by developing and deploying initiatives that drive efficiency, transparency and competitive advantage.
RBC was chosen from a pool of 18 finalists, and shared the top award in the exemplar category with Suncor Energy.
"RBC is a great example of a Canadian organization that has been consistently been able to balance sustainability with business excellence," said Mark Aboud, managing director, SAP Canada. "They understand what it means to be a good corporate citizen both in the communities they operate in and through their commitment to optimizing internal business processes," said Aboud.
RBC was selected for this award for a number of reasons, including the establishment of the RBC Environmental Blueprint, the company's 44 commitments to environmental responsibility, including overarching commitments to reduce their environmental footprint, promote responsible lending, and offer client's environmental products and services, and for creating the RBC Blue Water Project, an innovative, wide-ranging, 10-year global commitment to help protect the world's most precious natural resource: fresh water.
RBC has a long track record of caring for the environment. In 2010, RBC was honoured with the GLOBE Corporate Award for Environmental Excellence for its outstanding achievement in environmental stewardship and corporate-wide approach to sustainability. RBC has also been named to the 2009-2010 Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and the DJSI North American Index, and is recognized as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers, one of Canada's 50 Most Socially Responsible Corporations and one of the Best Workplaces in Canada. RBC is also listed on the Jantzi Social Index, the FTSE4Good Index, and the Carbon Disclosure Project Canadian Leadership Index.
