TORONTO, May 19, 2010 – For the second consecutive year, RBC (RY on TSX and NYSE) has been named one of Canada's Greenest Employers for 2010, according to a competition organized by the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers.
Now in its fourth year, this special designation recognizes employers that lead the nation in making environmental values part of their organizational culture. Winners of this competition have developed exceptional earth-friendly initiatives and are attracting employees and customers because of their environmental leadership.
"RBC has a longstanding commitment to reducing our environmental footprint and having environmentally responsible business activities, products and services. We believe that how we care for the environment impacts the quality of life of our employees, our clients and the communities we serve," said Zabeen Hirji, RBC's Chief Human Resources Officer. "We are honoured to be recognized again this year for our part in environmental sustainability."
A few key reasons why RBC was selected include: establishing the RBC Environmental Blueprint, which details a wide range of initiatives, policies, procedures and services related to environmental sustainability, and creating the RBC Blue Water Project, an innovative, wide-ranging, 10-year global commitment to help protect the world’s most precious natural resource: fresh water. It includes a $50 million philanthropic commitment to supporting organizations that protect watersheds and ensure access to clean drinking water. Since 2007, RBC has committed over $21 million to more than 200 organizations worldwide working in this area.
RBC is proud of its long track record of caring for the environment, and the awards and recognition received for its commitment to environmental sustainability. In 2010, RBC was honoured with the GLOBE Corporate Award for Environmental Excellence for its outstanding achievement in environmental stewardship and corporate-wide approach to sustainability. RBC has also been named to the 2009-2010 Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and the DJSI North American Index, and is recognized as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers, one of Canada's 50 Most Socially Responsible Corporations and one of the Best Workplaces in Canada. RBC is also listed on the Jantzi Social Index, the FTSE4Good Index, and the Carbon Disclosure Project Canadian Leadership Index.
