TORONTO - November 10, 2017 - Bruce Ross, Group Head of Technology & Operations at RBC has been named the 2017 Canadian CIO of the Year by the Information Technology Association of Canada. The award is presented to outstanding Chief Information Officers (CIOs) who demonstrate business and technological vision, entrepreneurship, a capacity to drive enterprise transformation, and a measurable operational strength that delivers shareholder or stakeholder value.

Bruce was selected from a field of strong nominees for his dynamic leadership and innovative approach. Since joining RBC in 2014, he has carefully led the Technology and Operations team through a significant period of rapid digital change. During his tenure, the team has successfully delivered a number of transformational programs, embraced powerful technology trends like DevOps, cloud, data, artificial intelligence (AI) and Blockchain, and helped position RBC at the leading edge of technology innovation in Canada and around the world.

“The rapid expansion of technology is making things possible today that we only dreamed of yesterday,” said Bruce. “I feel very lucky to be part of an organization focused on leveraging technology and investing in new capabilities to make a better day for our clients today, while also building for the future.”

In addition to ensuring that hundreds of millions of transactions are processed around the world every day, Bruce and his team are focused on delivering large programs, modernizing RBC’s core systems, and adapting to the risks of a changing cyber landscape. The team is helping to transform RBC to a digital bank of the future, using data and analytics to create exceptional client experiences. Most recently, they supported RBC’s recent launches of bill payments using Siri, developed a blockchain-based shadow ledger for payments between the U.S. and Canada, established Borealis AI, an AI Research Institute, and earned top honours in customer satisfaction for its Mobile Banking App from J.D. Power.
