Money Management for women in need
Managing your hard-earned money is always a challenge, even
if you have access to financial planning resources. It's made
more difficult when you're on a limited income, or have never
had the advantage of learning about budgeting, credit and
money management.
That's why, since 1999, RBC has supported "Money Management"
workshops offered by MCC Employment Development. This not-for-profit
organization, based in Calgary, Alberta, helps unemployed
and underemployed people move from poverty to prosperity.
In particular, the Money Management workshops help equip
low-income people with personal money management skills, and
are part of a suite of financial literacy programs that help
people manage their money and build assets. The workshops
are delivered in cooperation with local community groups and
shelters. In 2005, RBC's gift of $10,000 was directed to "Money
Management for Women" with a special focus on women in
need.
RBC has been involved with MCC's "Money Management"
workshops since their inception in 1999, with seed funding
of $20,000. Since that time, the program has grown and flourished.
For example, 400 people attended workshops in 2003/04, an
89 per cent increase from the year before, and a full 86 per
cent of participants report that they are handling their finances
more effectively now Two workshops were delivered in partnership
with Aboriginal organizations as well.
MCC Employment Development also provides access to a wide
range of other programs, on topics ranging from how to start
a business or become self employed, to using technology in
order to find employment opportunities.
Since 1999, RBC has donated $85,000 to MCC Employment Development.
