RBC in Your Community

RBC holds book drive to benefit YWCA

In 2005, RBC sponsored Vancouver's Unique Lives & Experiences event. As North America's foremost women's lecture series, this event provides intellectual entertainment, meaningful dialogue and stimulating interaction to thousands women across the continent every year. But in Vancouver, participants had a chance to make a difference in their community as well.

RBC partnered with the YWCA to hold a book drive to benefit women and children in need: participants were invited to donate a new copy of a book that inspired them at the door.

Over 300 new books were collected, including such favourites as Anne of Green Gables, Charlotte's Web, Great Expectations and The Purpose Driven Life.

"People clearly chose these books with a lot of care, because a book has the potential to provide a simple moment of peace or inspiration," said Jennifer Toderan, RBC Donations Manager. "It was so gratifying to see how much joy they felt at sharing something so personal with those in need."

The YWCA took great pleasure in distributing those books to women and children in need across Vancouver. Since 1997, RBC has donated over $250,000 to the YWCA British Columbia in support of its vision of equality for women.
