Turning the tide

March, 2005 — As RBC's Anthony Contento watched news of the devastating tsunamis that hit Southeast Asia on Boxing Day last year, he, like people all over the world, couldn't help feeling anguish for all those who lost their loved ones and homes in the disaster. Managing a team of mortgage specialists in Toronto, Ontario, Anthony helps clients obtain their dream homes every day, and so he has a unique sense of how important having a hearth and home can be, no matter where you live.

"It is very sad when someone loses their home, "said Anthony. "While I had no personal connection to anyone affected by the tsunami, I wanted to do something to give back to community, and wanted to try my best to help out."

So Anthony rounded up his mortgage specialist team to organize a fundraiser on March 11, 2005, and the team set to work inviting everyone they knew who had an interest in hearth and home to attend a gala dinner and silent auction.

Not only did 500 builders and realtors attend the event, they also showed their support by donating items to the silent auction. In the end, Anthony and his team of volunteers raised close to $27,000— donated to the Tsunami Relief Fund.
