Banks traditionally sponsored agricultural exhibitions and contests, often providing the medals, trophies and prize money awarded to contestants. Very much a central figure in the community, the local bank manager was frequently a member of the panel of judges and generally awarded the bank's prizes to winners.

The Union Bank of Halifax opened a branch in the Aberdeen Hotel in Kentville, Nova Scotia, in 1894 and was still operating in this location at the time of the merger with Royal Bank in 1910. A.A.Thomson, manager of the branch through the merger, managed the branch for 20 years from 1906 to 1926.
