Data Privacy Day 2015: Five tips to help protect your privacy

January 28th is Data Privacy Day, a day in which RBC and organizations around the world annually participate in initiatives to raise awareness of the importance of protecting the privacy of your information.

One of RBC’s highest priorities and a cornerstone of our business remains our commitment to the privacy and security of information – of our clients, employees and RBC itself.

Here are five tips that will help you keep your information private:

  1. Phishing emails – Email fraud is always a concern. Phishing is when a third party sends you an email pretending to be from another company with the intent of fooling you into giving up your personal information. RBC created the Phishing Resource site to help you recognize fake emails and report phishing attempts.

  2. Telephone calls – Third parties may call you pretending to be RBC or another company. RBC will never call you to ask you for your password for online banking or any of your personal identification numbers (PIN). If you’re unsure if a call is from RBC, hang up and contact us via your branch or a call centre.

  3. Protect your mail – Collect your mail daily. If your bills or statements don’t arrive on time, follow up immediately to ensure they have not been fraudulently redirected. As an alternative to mail, consider requesting electronic statements.

  4. Limit your risk – Only carry credit and debit cards you use. Don’t carry your birth certificate and social insurance card when you don’t need them. Instead, keep them in a safe place.

  5. Your information online – Limit the information that you make available about yourself online, such as through social networking sites or registering for contests. When using unprotected WiFi, restrict yourself to relatively harmless activities like reading the news, and avoid anything that requires a password, like banking and email.
