The rise of renewables also means global carbon dioxide emissions are \u201cset to peak soon,\u201d the agency forecasts.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-weight: 500;\">\u2794<\/span> <strong>Canadians can save money and enjoy a low-carbon lifestyle.<\/strong> That\u2019s according to a new <a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=b60808f2241bae822be185eb1ebbf1f952c21a6192308ca8d4af346d07ce2c0a39d1d3813cde281ede82f976f0c708b6842603e70cf307c9\">Clean Energy Canada<\/a> report that suggests installing heat pumps and buying electric vehicles can do both (as much as <strong>$777 in monthly savings <\/strong>for a detached house in B.C.). But that saving hack faces a grim outlook: the end of the federal Greener Home Grants and lack of affordable EVs could make it costlier to go green very soon.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-weight: 500;\">\u2794<\/span> <strong>A Trump victory could upend energy markets.<\/strong> Polls suggest the 45th U.S. president has an even chance to win the White House on Nov. 5. That would shake up geopolitics, with Iran potentially emerging as a principal target of U.S. sanctions, says RBC Capital Markets&#8217; <strong>Helima Croft <\/strong>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=b60808f2241bae82a8f9f5e0f490b3eff55fa8b425226011f7bf066c45eb233385eef73203d2d8e2643eb287614c050db1eb46e23cdc4866\">insurance industry<\/a> says property claims, driven by floods, now account for 36.8% of all claims.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-weight: 500;\">\u2794<\/span> Before COP29, there\u2019s COP16. In Cali, Columbia. It\u2019s the first biennial UN summit on diversity since the landmark Global Diversity Framework in Montreal in 2022. Key agenda item includes a framework to address \u201cbiopiracy,\u201d that would ensure countries are paid for, say, digital fingerprints of rare plant species that biotech companies would use to make drugs. We are calling this season the <a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=b747f92495bfbc08513ed9163089877684d75c058eeb465b6dd672ecd3a95767f4f64e6939d7da58ad1bae92ee38cad8b4d696f66f9b855f\">Lemony Snicket<\/a> season,\u201d she said in a phone call from her 35-acre farm in Sturgeon County. Like other farmers, she is adapting to the changing weather: next season she will plant pumpkins on higher ground to protect them from an avalanche of melting frost.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-weight: 500;\">\u2794<\/span> <strong>Bi-Weekly Climate Action Award:<\/strong> To <a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=b747f92495bfbc080c9bff31e342d8787acb7b1a15f2f39d2cb9b71dc9d2f39754c499901401c6722fc16502fb61149fcaae2af96878eb2b\">Lennard de Kler<\/a> who researches <strong>wartime greenhouse gas emissions<\/strong>, and will lead a panel discussion at the COP29 summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-weight: 500;\">\u2794<\/span> <strong>Bi-Weekly Climate Fail Award: <\/strong>A \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=b747f92495bfbc082c60327a1dffd3054f1245635f6028c3b0e2176e4543b69b4371c572f556cfe72cfd584750dde93f0d30bb43966da816\">bonkers<\/a>\u201d British government proposal to burn imported wood, potentially from countries including North Korea and Afghanistan, to meet Net Zero goals.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sub-title\">The nuclear race is on<\/h3>\n<p>If we are nearing the Age of Electricity, as the IEA says, perhaps nuclear is already basking in its Renaissance period, driven by Big Tech. Amazon followed up its 960-megawatt contract with Talen Energy in March, with a US$500-million, 5,000MW deal with X-energy to bankroll a new generation of SMRs. Google has unveiled similar plans, while a Microsoft deal is dusting off the mothballed Three Mile Island nuclear plant, and Nvidia is eyeing Japan\u2019s nuclear power\u2014all to meet their insatiable artificial intelligence and datacentre demand.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-62774\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/03\/Climate-Crunch-Weekly-Charts-for-10.24-Nuclear.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1279\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"left-copy1\" style=\"margin-bottom: 3.75pt;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">While nuclear was given the green light from policymakers at COP28 in Dubai, admittedly the sector had still been waiting to \u201ctake off\u201d \u2013 until now. The string of recent announcements has nuclear stocks <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=b747f92495bfbc0897ce182cb9ec1e712145ae3f079d0d63a9b5eaedef593fa8e762d4d68812e477d70ffc9cae80c8ecc919afbfee05ad28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flying<\/a><span style=\"color: black;\">, and meaningfully outperforming the S&#038;P 500 on the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shaz Merwat<\/strong>, energy policy lead, points to two key implications for Canada:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-weight: 500;\">\u2794<\/span> Nuclear is in <strong>Canada\u2019s wheelhouse <\/strong>, as we know a thing or two\u2014or ten\u2014about the tech. Nuclear is becoming a key provincial plank, most notably within Ontario\u2019s plan to meet a 75% surge in demand by 2050 (to support AI demand and others). There is also room to export our expertise to those warming up to nuclear \u2013 Ontario Power Generation\u2019s SMRs are a case in point. The U.S. is already moving swiftly in <a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=b747f92495bfbc0801e5ca9dc0b2aa3fdc4e60a1f17d968d62f64fafc5113b116e50966ab181adf0d277ad6f89fb7f7740d4a3034533378c\">hawking its SMR tech<\/a> to Asian countries.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-weight: 500;\">\u2794<\/span> Second, it showcases the need for offtake agreements to drive deployment of new decarbonization technologies. <strong>Can Canada replicate this on the carbon capture front? <\/strong>The U.S. IRA provided a robust offtake mechanism with a guaranteed US$85\/ton tax credit. Canada\u2019s approach to derisk capital expenditures (investment tax credits) is economically sound, but has struggled to provide carbon price (revenue) certainty to date.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sub-title\">Carbon Markets For The Climate Era<\/h3>\n<p>Nine Canadian industries, including oil and gas, petroleum refineries, iron and steel, cement and aluminum, are vulnerable to carbon competitiveness and leakage risks, according to a new report by the newly-launched <a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=b747f92495bfbc0866aa2ef5d2e240b63e8b8cb0ba1ad01541cfcc83ebbe51d0cca04964c1ea6c042fb66ba9277dbda3813b4d8245a0b4ba\">Commission on Carbon Competitiveness<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aaron Cosbey<\/strong>, Chair of the Commission and one of the authors, says industrial carbon pricing (also known as large emitter trading systems, or LETS) remains the best option in the medium term.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-weight: 500;\">\u2794<\/span> \u201cBut we found some sectors at much higher risk than others (iron &#038; steel, basic chemicals, nitrogenous fertilizers, pulp &#038; paper, with honorable mention to cement),\u201d Cosbey said in an email. \u201cIn those sectors there should be more generous use of performance benchmark standards within LETS, keeping the average cost of carbon very low.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-weight: 500;\">\u2794<\/span> Keeping credit markets in balance <strong>will be hard<\/strong> as firms decarbonize, so Canada needs to start exploring options for further protection for the long term.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-weight: 500;\">\u2794<\/span> One option? A comprehensive <strong>border carbon adjustment<\/strong>. But it\u2019s potentially trade-illegal, messes with incentives in the domestic carbon market, and would kick a hornet\u2019s nest south of the border.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-weight: 500;\">\u2794<\/span> Another option is <strong>product-level GHG intensity<\/strong> standard\u2014as a condition of sale on the domestic market (also applicable to imports).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-weight: 500;\">\u2794<\/span> Both options need <strong>U.S. co-operation<\/strong> and complex instrument design. Canada needs to start working on them now, the Commission recommends.
