Now they\u2019re exploring trade deals, investment opportunities and, if plans come together, a visit to the Kingdom next year by Mark Carney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Age of Trump, they\u2019re among a host of mid-sized powers that are looking to carve out a new economic and geopolitical path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what could redefine the Saudi-Canadian relationship: energy, including renewables, nuclear and EVs; advanced manufacturing, including drones and satellites; AI and quantum; mining and critical minerals; and advanced education and health care. The two countries also have a lot of capital to deploy, and a lot of capital that they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rapidly evolving relationship was on display earlier this month when Saudi Investment Minister Khalid Al-Falih spent a day in Ottawa, with Carney and a range of senior ministers, and then a day on Bay Street. Less noticed but also important was Alberta Premier. Danielle Smith\u2019s visit to the region, including Saudi Arabia, to promote energy technology and investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s some of what may be worth watching in the coming months:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-black-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Carney\u2019s pitch for $1 trillion+&nbsp;in new investment (most of it private capital) will need to include sources like Saudi investment funds and corporates;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Saudi\u2019s ambitions to diversify its energy sector\u2014Al-Falih mentioned green and blue hydrogen, green ammonia and EVs\u2014could use a lot more Canadian technology, talent and investment. The visiting Saudis met with Ontario autoparts makers, hoping they might want to be part of the Saudi ambition to make 600,000 EVs a year;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Canadian manufacturers and producers, especially in agri-food, can be leading players in Saudi\u2019s ambition to be a food hub for the Middle East and North Africa.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-block  pos-rel\" style=\"border-radius:0px\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-inner-block  section-inner pad-t-0 mob-pad-t-0\" style=\"border-radius:0x\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-rbc-dark-blue-tint-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a78f007f6b07f7bfd34a14b1e9865db2\" id=\"h-the-week-that-was\">The week that was<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-black-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Ottawa is hoping to restart trade talks with India<\/strong> under a \u201cnew process,\u201d said Canadian&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-canada-india-trade-talks-minister-sidhu\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-22506-47fb93ef\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-canada-india-trade-talks-minister-sidhu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">.<\/a>&nbsp;On a three-day visit to India, the Minister discussed critical minerals, clean energy, agriculture and artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>In an effort to lower grocery bills<\/strong>, U.S. President Donald Trump is working <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-11-13\/us-argentina-reach-deal-to-open-their-markets-on-key-goods?srnd=homepage-canada\" data-dig-id=\"LP-22506-f525630f\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"lower tariffs\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">lower tariffs<\/a> on items like coffee and bananas into deals with a handful of Latin American countries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>The price of pasta from Italy, however, could skyrocket<\/strong> for Americans come January when the proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/business-news\/italian-pasta-tariffs-trump-rcna243264\" data-dig-id=\"LP-22506-fec8741b\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"107% tariff \" class=\"rbc-link-format\">107% tariff <\/a>on goods from 13 Italian companies is scheduled to begin.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Canada\u2019s forestry industry is planning to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e56e8bb0-6dc0-4447-a907-e95164cec8e5\" data-dig-id=\"LP-22506-d42567a4\" data-dig-label=\"re-route\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">re-route<\/a> about 10% of wood<\/strong> (enough to build 75,000 homes) that would normally go to the U.S. to the UK and Europe.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p><strong>Amazon and Microsoft threw their support behind the Gain AI Act<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/amazon-and-microsoft-back-effort-that-would-restrict-nvidias-exports-to-china-21e29e01?mod=hp_lead_pos3\" data-dig-id=\"LP-22506-258b18c3\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"legislation\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">legislation<\/a> that would require chip makers to satisfy U.S. demand before exporting to other countries, including China. Nvidia, which has been seeking access to the world\u2019s second largest economy, view the act as an unnecessary intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"everviz-jq50wrMwb\" class=\"everviz-jq50wrMwb\" data-view=\"graph\"><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-block  pos-rel\" style=\"border-radius:0px\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-inner-block  section-inner pad-t-0 mob-pad-t-0\" style=\"border-radius:0x\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-rbc-dark-blue-tint-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-06a329dcaaab8f7affe2e8c3d3bf8070\" id=\"h-north-america-s-critical-minerals-moment-and-canada-s-strategic-role\">North America\u2019s critical minerals moment \u2014 and Canada\u2019s strategic role<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Shaz Merwat,<\/strong> Director of Energy Policy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent submission to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer from the Coalition for North American Trade (CNAT)\u2014co-chaired by former U.S. House Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady, Canada\u2019s former NAFTA lead negotiator Steve Verheul, and Mexico\u2019s Ken Ramos\u2014positions CUSMA as one of the continent\u2019s most powerful tools for rebuilding critical-minerals security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key details from the filing:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-black-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>The U.S. remains 100 percent import-reliant for 16 critical minerals (including graphite) and over 50 percent reliant for another 29 such as rare earths, zinc, cobalt, and nickel.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Canada is the U.S.\u2019s primary import source for indium, nickel, potash, tellurium, uranium, vanadium, and zinc\u2014and the second largest for copper, graphite, niobium, and tungsten.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The CNAT submission argues the CUSMA\u2019s tariff-free architecture and co-production model are the ideal platform to accelerate re- and near-shoring of critical-minerals supply chains\u2014from exploration and permitting to processing, refining, and battery-grade materials. Integrating Canada\u2019s resource base with U.S. manufacturing strength and Mexico\u2019s processing capacity fills a gap in critical-minerals collaboration to date, with most of the focus on G7+ allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Canada, the strategic opening lies in deepening trilateral integration\u2014leveraging CUSMA to attract investment, expand value-added processing, and align upstream
