The facility\u2014seen as a hub for direct air capture activities\u2014will serve as a sandbox for firms to test direct-air carbon-sucking technologies before they scale their operations commercially. Eight companies\u2014from Canada, the U.S. and Germany and others\u2014have already signed up. Widespread adoption of wood, specifically mass timber, as a substitute or complement to concrete and steel could cut embodied emissions in buildings by as much as 25%, according to our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=617b46fd7e7f950353ead19ed353f0d0a2c3b4a7348246b9b5278e48524b4c598a301e3de649d4b9b7baab2a106b2e3fa7f9a9965b389f13\" data-dig-id=\"LP-15892-1aa38414\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"report\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">report<\/a><\/strong> <em>Mass Timber<\/em>. The five-year plan comes as the province\u2019s $20-billion industry is facing punitive U.S. tariffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2794 <strong>Forecasters are scrambling to assess demand from data centres in the U.S.<\/strong> Electricity demand is now set to grow 25% by 2030 and 78% by 2050, compared to 2023 levels, according to a new report by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=617b46fd7e7f95036c2dae968fad584ac430b9851e5e068b54c1f2044fb0b3f4230d3f4c8907e2c29b46493805300034e7ba4102ea0e3c06\" data-dig-id=\"LP-15892-dd98befb\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"ICF, a consulting firm\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">ICF, a consulting firm<\/a><\/strong>. That\u2019s an annual growth rate of 3.2% through 2030 (1.4% previously) and 2.2% (1.1% previously) through 2050 and contrasts with the past two decades when U.S. electricity demand was essentially flat. The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=f1ae2506825a8ca11c111c7d2984a02d2dfbb7f251cfc5f7bd2f5be5e24e02f03ded4a064600ca6e1af735b3bc04b8f6d797e587bbc17c6d\" data-dig-id=\"LP-15892-76da73bc\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"strain on capacity\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">strain on capacity<\/a><\/strong> could lead to a doubling of electricity prices by 2050, ICF warns. Texas, along with California and PJM region (covering 13 mid-Atlantic and Midwest states)\u2014markets already importing Canadian electricity\u2014will see the highest demand growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2794 <strong>Brazil is developing bespoke, sustainable soybeans for China. <\/strong>Inspired by its successful Boi China beef model, the Latin American country aims to develop &#8220;Soy China,&#8221; through a supply chain that aligns with China&#8217;s environmental standards and runs on renewable energy. It&#8217;s also seen as a way for China to counter the EU Deforestation Regulations (EUDR), which have much stricter rules. Many countries (inside and outside the EU) have raised concerns about the EUDR because of its stringent traceability requirements that do not align with conventional soybean supply chains. And Brazil and China&#8217;s move is alternate route for soybeans to flow. The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=f1ae2506825a8ca1a2091cca5d774a65193404f0d25328c710b76c9ca256cae6592e66c0f54d1cb7e2a669f7e85551a707ff12c1e84dd70f\" data-dig-id=\"LP-15892-7214eef2\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"U.S. Department of Agriculture\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">U.S. Department of Agriculture<\/a><\/strong> recently warned that sustainable soybeans would directly challenge American and Canadian exporters&#8217; market share in China.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-block  pos-rel\" style=\"border-radius:0px\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-inner-block  section-inner\" style=\"border-radius:0x\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading mar-t-0 mob-mar-t-0\" id=\"h-nature-capital-canada-s-other-green-power\">Nature capital: Canada\u2019s other green power<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By<em> Lisa Ashton<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As climate change disrupts the U.K.\u2019s landscapes\u2014from the Scottish Highlands to the Somerset Wetlands\u2014the country is facing a \u00a397-billion ($181-billion) nature asset deficit. The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=f1ae2506825a8ca13859c933b6db3ceff33e790b08da56ad97d9d4deb8ceb6cc285a85a6da2da425a30a6f50c2b611ae5fe4ec18bbee8557\" data-dig-id=\"LP-15892-560d27a8\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Green Finance Institute\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Green Finance Institute<\/a> <\/strong>(GFI) estimates that planned public spending on conservation and restoration by the government is well short of delivering on its binding commitments, including the 25-year Environment Plan and the U.K.\u2019s 30&#215;30 targets under the UN Biodiversity targets. It also presents real risks and losses of between \u00a3150-\u00a3300 billion of U.K.\u2019s GDP by 2030. The U.K. government is now <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=f1ae2506825a8ca1cc9bd98e6db66fc62f9e38d89fb36f68d3d1e7d8d130406c4f95e0aff27a40bbe4d9703b009e0627822d7946d1c70316\" data-dig-id=\"LP-15892-605f1a60\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"seeking ideas\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">seeking ideas<\/a> <\/strong>from businesses, investors, and innovators to protect the \u201cnatural foundations of its economy,\u201d and spur growth in its \u201cburgeoning\u201d nature services sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada can draw lessons from the U.K. experience. It\u2019s home to landmark investments in several initiatives including the Great Bear Sea project finance for permanence (PFP), and watershed policy commitments to protect and conserve 30% of Canada\u2019s land and water by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada\u2019s is truly a nature powerhouse with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=f1ae2506825a8ca150cd1e92e5b82fc2d77a0faab567355e39b9467959e05d636c10d5352fad69482c1c95757e213ffcc14d07f659c00ed0\" data-dig-id=\"LP-15892-1824fdc7\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"riches\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">riches<\/a><\/strong> that are second to none:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2794 It\u2019s one of just five countries that collectively contain more than 70% of the world\u2019s remaining intact ecosystems;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2794 20% of the world\u2019s total freshwater;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2794 25% of the world\u2019s wetlands;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2794 24% of the world\u2019s boreal forests;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2794 the world\u2019s longest coastline;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2794 the world\u2019s longest coastline;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2794 ecosystems in Canada provide essential habitat for approximately 80,000 species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, Canada, like many others, has not been able to unlock nature finance at scale to address declining natural capital as a share of GDP\u2014roughly 70% in 1995 to about 40% today\u2014and mitigate the risks associated with a natural environment that\u2019s experiencing more deterioration than the U.S. and the U.K. Wildfires year-to-date alone could risk 0.4% of Saskatchewan\u2019s GDP and 0.2% for Alberta, according to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=f1ae2506825a8ca13cdbeb00389e2c50de996c42e1479e7971f0352d4465b6f664e21e177ad575d1bf5d824d32ff9916b77b55aa3644576b\" data-dig-id=\"LP-15892-9d8997a3\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Statistics Canada estimates\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Statistics Canada estimates<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nature finance is in its infancy, but a pathway to build natural capital in Canada and investments is slowly being charted. In 2022, the Government of Canada issued its first green bond, valued at $5 billion, with a portion of funds going to nature-based projects including financing that supports the adoption of climate-smart agriculture practices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exploring nature finance is an opportunity to build greater resilience in Canada\u2019s natural resource dependent economy driven by fuel, food, fertilizer and forestry production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbc-rbc-block with-borders bg-light-blue pos-rel rounded-corners top-line-blue block-wpr mar-t mob-mar-t\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbc-rbc-block-inner-block block-inner\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/en\/thought-leadership\/subscribe\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-15892-86991733\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Sign up\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Sign up<\/a> to receive RBC Thought Leadership\u2019s newsletter, major reports and analysis on the biggest ideas shaping Canadian business and the economy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-block  pos-rel\" style=\"border-radius:0px\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-inner-block  section-inner\" style=\"border-radius:0x\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-trends-tech-science\">Trends, tech &amp; science<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gas flaring in Alberta is raising alarms among health professionals.<\/strong> The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=f1ae2506825a8ca1976d0400d18c255f66e64d0b826fbe6c6b734ec33f68b3d2f8a6cd065e20f3b9e6679a2e6151c52beb746a76692ee089\" data-dig-id=\"LP-15892-858ef70a\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"CAPE \" class=\"rbc-link-format\">CAPE <\/a><\/strong>) Alberta chapter cited research that shows a 1% increase in flaring exposure led to a 0.73% rise in respiratory-related hospital visits. The warning comes after <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=f1ae2506825a8ca110c79d7955e86bf3fec3178d85342dbf7d9af4de36f146e06476794e33bad013ed3ad8efcec94f85b715a18570eb01cc\" data-dig-id=\"LP-15892-ea16fa8e\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Reuters\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Reuters<\/a><\/strong> reported that gas flaring blew past the province&#8217;s self-imposed limit on annual natural gas flaring in 2024, for a second year in a row. In June, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=f1ae2506825a8ca13855127c7cf465e105b44a1f10ffabb6e4ade926891ea3fff595e90d2811b5ec10a1d54db6ceb5ae3480a858a33f79d4\" data-dig-id=\"LP-15892-86e14cf9\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Alberta Energy Regulator\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Alberta Energy Regulator<\/a><\/strong> said it was ending limits on flaring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Overcapacity is reinforcing steel\u2019s hard-to-abate reputation. <\/strong>Around 30% of steel capacity remains unused globally, an excess that\u2019s sent prices plunging to a four-year low. With margins under pressure, steelmakers are hardly in the mood to decarbonize. The problem is set to worsen: more than 40% of new steelmaking capacity\u2014mostly from \u201cnon-market\u201d forces such as China\u2014that\u2019s set to enter the market by 2027 will be emission-intensive, according to an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=e3ad79dc70d91c79b396f7471807f54436d46e129ee86b52169d8e2ed76304e39502cdf4224d79ba162b0099c5b58cd167cf098ea396b738\" data-dig-id=\"LP-15892-19806238\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"OECD report\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">OECD report<\/a> <\/strong>. Strengthening international co-operation to address excess capacity and market distortions will be vital to improve the outlook for steelmakers in market economies, the OECD recommends. That would give steelmakers the space to advance decarbonization efforts. New anti-dumping tariffs in Canada and the U.S., primarily aimed at China, is also an opportunity to establish a green steel market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Plastic bag bans and fees are making a difference.<\/strong> Several U.S. jurisdictions that enforced these policies have seen a 25-47% dip in plastic bags as a share of total items collected in shoreline cleanups, according to an extensive <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=e3ad79dc70d91c79b527912cc1e3d194d55eb30ddb52b4c84a70f04e6816a12fae6bc53854ba6af9623e3108021a7f2b9c4ccf31d2d996c4\" data-dig-id=\"LP-15892-44b5184c\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"University of Delaware\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">University of Delaware<\/a> <\/strong>and Columbia University <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/click.communication.rbc.com\/?qs=e3ad79dc70d91c79d9a945e50aa9656f94aa5126637771e70b9efbd50219b369c3c2528bd691e467e92545f33033fe5c7ffe1fb1e52a256d\" data-dig-id=\"LP-15892-90e525f4\" data-dig-category=\"LP\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"study\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">study<\/a><\/strong>. The ban also reduced the number of animals entangled along the shoreline. Still, plastic pollution overall remains a growing challenge. Clean energy investment is at an all-time high.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Would the U.S. new \u201cbig, beautiful bill\u201d that guts several clean energy incentives, and Canada\u2019s Bill C-5, that promotes clean and conventional energy projects, move the needle on energy investments?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>The biggest use of investment globally is electrification, which will consume almost half ($1.5 trillion) of all energy capital.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p>Only a third of investment will go to oil, natural gas and coal:<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item mar-l-hlf mob-mar-l-hlf\">\n<p>lower oil prices are likely to keep investment down;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item mar-l-hlf mob-mar-l-hlf\">\n<p>LNG investment is on \u201ca strong upward trajectory,\u201d led by the U.S., Qatar and Canada;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item mar-l-hlf mob-mar-l-hlf\">\n<p>nuclear\u2019s renaissance continues, rising by 50% over the past five years;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item mar-l-hlf mob-mar-l-hlf\">\n<p>coal-fired power in advanced economies has ground to a halt, while it\u2019s showing a comeback in China and India.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The bottom line is the world will continue to need to invest trillions a year in energy, across a wide array of sources.
