Aligning regulations, investments and utilities of three of the smaller regions in Canada by spring of 2027 would be a test case closely watched by larger provinces that are also eyeing interties to share power generation and capacity. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/12024056\/quebec-newfoundland-churchill-falls\/\" data-dig-id=\"LP-ClimateAction-7707-833e3275\" data-dig-label=\"Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP-ClimateAction\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec<\/a> signed a $70-billion clean power deal\u2014said to be North America\u2019s largest clean energy investment, if completed. The pact would double Newfoundland\u2019s total power capacity, and potentially boosts Quebec\u2019s electricity exports. Quebec will pay 6.2 cents per kilowatt-hour in the new pact, a significant jump over the decades-old deal of 0.2 cents, that had triggered a long-running dispute between the two provinces.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Indigenous equity in Canadian projects grew 290% in eight years. <\/strong>Between 2017 and 2025, the number of Indigenous-owned projects starting operations grew from 10 to 39, while at least 47 Indigenous-owned projects will come online across Canada this year, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/media.licdn.com\/dms\/document\/media\/v2\/D5610AQF9NwLTOCnBZw\/ads-document-pdf-analyzed\/B56Z9s17S2IMAY-\/0\/1784237505262\/StateofIndigenousEquityOwnership2026Reportpdf?e=1787230800&amp;v=beta&amp;t=UtoGFEO8vRM_epZSYFPmLosdSbFUyJO7P4vQTIg6Fnk\" data-dig-id=\"LP-ClimateAction-7707-833e3275\" data-dig-category=\"LP-ClimateAction\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Indigenous Equity Monitor\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Indigenous Equity Monitor<\/a>. Nearly 87% of the 546 Indigenous-owned projects are power and utilities and carbon capture, highlighting First Nations\u2019 role in clean energy. The experience in project development arms communities with experience, funding and skills to participate in several energy developments on the horizon.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Canadian Crawford Nickel mine just got the greenlight from the Major Projects Office.<\/strong> The Timmins mine (featured in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/climate-action-institute\/climate-action-25\/heavy-industry.html\" data-dig-id=\"LP-ClimateAction-7707-833e3275\" data-dig-category=\"LP-ClimateAction\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"2025 Climate Action Report\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">2025 Climate Action Report<\/a>) is expected to be the biggest mine in the world when completed in 2029. It\u2019s a flagship development in a Western nation for a material critical for EV batteries. Nickel production is currently dominated by Indonesia, which carefully regulates quota and exports, and Chinese processing companies. Demand for nickel is set to grow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/data-and-statistics\/charts\/total-nickel-demand-by-sector-and-scenario-2020-2040\" data-dig-id=\"LP-ClimateAction-7707-833e3275\" data-dig-category=\"LP-ClimateAction\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"65% \" class=\"rbc-link-format\">65% <\/a>this decade alone.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-block  pos-rel\" style=\"border-radius:0px\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-inner-block  section-inner\" style=\"border-radius:0x\">\n<h2 id=\"h-when-ai-comes-to-town\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-rbc-climate-action-green-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7ea9886c81d21dcf7560b3be3bc2a992\">When AI comes to town<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nimbyism is coming for AI data centres.Oakville, Mississauga, and New York state are among North American jurisdictions looking to protect their power infrastructure from AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The transformative (and disruptive) technology is an energy\u2014and capital\u2014sponge. The communities are also seeking greater transparency on water, heat and air pollution associated with data centres, in addition to how these power-hungry projects impact Canadians provinces\u2019 efforts to decarbonize their grids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s the scale of capital and energy AI needs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>US$715 billion:<\/strong> Capital expenditure of hyperscalers in 2026 globally\u2014that\u2019s more than the US$600-billion invested in the entire U.S. energy sector in <a href=\"https:\/\/iea.blob.core.windows.net\/assets\/3179f7f8-01f6-4dd6-bffa-c9f7b73f1dc9\/KeyQuestionsonEnergyandAI.pdf\">2024<\/a>, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/iea.blob.core.windows.net\/assets\/3179f7f8-01f6-4dd6-bffa-c9f7b73f1dc9\/KeyQuestionsonEnergyandAI.pdf\">International Energy Agency.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>US$200 billion:<\/strong> The amount AI companies tapped in debt markets to fund expansion. They are set to become the largest issuers of corporate debt going forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Five to 10 years.<\/strong> Wait times for grid connection in many jurisdictions globally. In Canada it averages <a href=\"https:\/\/gowlingwlg.com\/en\/insights-resources\/articles\/2026\/the-status-of-data-centre-development-in-bc-and-alberta\">six years<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>10% of total electricity demand growth globally<\/strong>: AI power consumption will more than double to 950 TWh by 2030 from current levels. In the U.S, data centre electricity consumption would account for 45% of all growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Data centres will likely lean more on fossil fuels by 2030.<\/strong> Around 252 TWh will be powered by low-carbon energy sources, including nuclear. Renewable gains must exceed fossil gains by 4\u20135X for net emissions to reach breakeven levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Big Tech has gone dark on its emissions footprint. <\/strong>Multi-billion-dollar AI start-ups have no obligation to report their carbon footprint, while several listed Big Tech firms and investors have also cooled on their environmental disclosures as they power through the AI frenzy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Clash between sovereignty and power. <\/strong>The Ontario province unveiled a playbook last week that aims to maintain Canadian data sovereignty but also ensure that deep-pocketed hyperscalers are paying higher prices and get no financial support. <strong><br><br><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-block  pos-rel\" style=\"border-radius:0px\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-inner-block  section-inner\" style=\"border-radius:0x\">\n<h2 id=\"h-the-task-force-of-nature\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-rbc-climate-action-green-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6b2efe29cde5e1a3f90b13c10872252f\">The (task)force of nature<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ottawa\u2019s new Expert Taskforce on Natural Capital Accounting and Nature Financing is among the first critical steps to attract more investment in protecting nature amid an onslaught from extreme weather. It follows the launch of a federal <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.gc.ca\/collections\/collection_2026\/eccc\/en4\/En4-792-2026-eng.pdf\" data-dig-id=\"LP-ClimateAction-7707-833e3275\" data-dig-category=\"LP-ClimateAction\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"strategy\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">strategy<\/a> to protect nature in the spring, aimed at increasing conservation areas, aligning economic growth with nature stewardship, and mobilizing private capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These efforts come after Canada missed, by a long shot, its 2025 target to protect and conserve 25% of terrestrial land and inland water and leaves a very narrow path for its 30% of land conservation by 2030 goal. &nbsp;The failure was highlighted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/auditor-general\/our-work\/audit-reports\/establishing-terrestrial-protected-areas.html\" data-dig-id=\"LP-ClimateAction-7707-833e3275\" data-dig-label=\"2025 Report of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP-ClimateAction\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">2025 Report of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development<\/a> on behalf of the Auditor General of Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"613\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/en\/thought-leadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/08\/Climate-Crunch-8.20-Losing-Ground.png?quality=80&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7712\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/en\/thought-leadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/08\/Climate-Crunch-8.20-Losing-Ground.png 4000w, https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/en\/thought-leadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/08\/Climate-Crunch-8.20-Losing-Ground.png?resize=300,179 300w, https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/en\/thought-leadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/08\/Climate-Crunch-8.20-Losing-Ground.png?resize=768,459 768w, https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/en\/thought-leadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/08\/Climate-Crunch-8.20-Losing-Ground.png?resize=1024,613 1024w, https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/en\/thought-leadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/08\/Climate-Crunch-8.20-Losing-Ground.png?resize=1536,919 1536w, https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/en\/thought-leadership\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2026\/08\/Climate-Crunch-8.20-Losing-Ground.png?resize=2048,1225 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mar-t mob-mar-t wp-block-paragraph\">There are more reasons to be optimistic about the approach to 30&#215;30 than previous conservation efforts, says <strong>Wilson Fink<\/strong>, Director of Agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-black-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pillar 1-protecting nature. <\/strong>Acknowledging the need for an all-of-Canada approach<strong>. <\/strong>Protecting 30% of land is difficult when only 6% of Canada\u2019s land is federally owned<sup><a href=\"#legal-1\" data-dig-id=\"LP-ClimateAction-7707-833e3275\" data-dig-category=\"LP-ClimateAction\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"1\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">1<\/a><\/sup>. The rest is controlled by provinces, Indigenous governments, and private landowners. Collaboration would be key.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pillar 2\u2014building Canada well.<\/strong> The commitment to be data driven and \u201cenable integrated conservation, carbon accounting, and project planning,\u201d to facilitate funding for nature.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pillar 3\u2014mobilizing capital.<\/strong> It\u2019s the least developed of the three, but perhaps the most consequential. There is global momentum to build nature frameworks that can accommodate more substantial investments, but they need harmonization and less risk to scale successfully. This is where the taskforce will spend most of its time.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-block  pos-rel\" style=\"border-radius:0px\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-inner-block  section-inner\" style=\"border-radius:0x\">\n<h2 id=\"h-conversations\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-rbc-climate-action-green-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a88b7af117af96f56e66f06349a7f92d\">Conversations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-black-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe want to see carbon markets take their rightful place in the climate finance architecture,\u201d said <strong>Mura Kurum<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-08-06\/turkey-says-carbon-markets-to-take-rightful-place-at-cop31?srnd=phx-green\" data-dig-id=\"LP-ClimateAction-7707-833e3275\" data-dig-category=\"LP-ClimateAction\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"Turkey\u2019s environment minister\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">Turkey\u2019s environment minister<\/a> and president of COP31, hosted by his country in November.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Climate wonks are abuzz with a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/-\/media\/files\/publications\/wp\/2026\/english\/wpiea2026157-source-pdf.pdf\">I<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/-\/media\/files\/publications\/wp\/2026\/english\/wpiea2026157-source-pdf.pdf\" data-dig-id=\"LP-ClimateAction-7707-833e3275\" data-dig-category=\"LP-ClimateAction\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"nternational Monetary Fund\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">nternational Monetary Fund<\/a> working paper by <strong>Jean-Baptiste Fressoz<\/strong>, <em>et al<\/em>, on how new energy sources are additive not substituting old energy sources, effectively calling energy transition an illusion. Some say that\u2019s not entirely true, pointing to the demise of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/jeanboissinot_why-is-the-statement-the-net-zero-transition-share-7493595765102243840-KNuA\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAAFCUqEBQxJ-H43ZIPWeZBOMzKVgmc2PzbI\">whale oil<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canadair\u2019s water bombers \u201care the backbone of most European firefighting operations,\u201d according to <strong>Neil Sweeney<\/strong>, De Havilland Canada&#8217;s vice-president of operations.
