Can our infrastructure keep up?\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"tl-featured-post-banner__excerpt\">\n\t\t\t\tA key risk to the Canadian grain sector is its ability to move its products to overseas markets.\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-block  pos-rel\" style=\"border-radius:0px\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-inner-block  section-inner\" style=\"border-radius:0x\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite&nbsp;recent crop and export volume hitting&nbsp;records, a key risk to&nbsp;the Canadian&nbsp;grain sector is its ability to&nbsp;move&nbsp;its products to overseas markets&nbsp;efficiently and reliably.&nbsp;Infrastructure\u2014particularly&nbsp;rail&nbsp;networks&nbsp;and&nbsp;port terminals\u2014isn&#8217;t&nbsp;keeping pace with&nbsp;the growth of bulk commodities like wheat and canola. The&nbsp;risks&nbsp;of&nbsp;disruption leaves money on the table for farmers and limits investment and business opportunities\u2014all while&nbsp;Canada&nbsp;seeks&nbsp;to&nbsp;diversify and expand its trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Targeted infrastructure investments can mitigate the risks of disruption and congestion, but that requires agriculture to receive the same focus as other critical sectors in the nation\u2019s conversation about competitiveness and growth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Export Development Canada notes that the country\u2019s infrastructure investment&nbsp;trails&nbsp;many&nbsp;OECD peers, and the ratio of infrastructure investments to trade volumes has been falling.<sup><a href=\"#legal-1\" data-dig-id=\"LP-Agriculture-7394-2d676cc3\" data-dig-label=\"1\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP-Agriculture\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">1<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Canada has an overall infrastructure deficit ranging from between $110 billion to&nbsp;$270 billion,<sup><a href=\"#legal-2\" data-dig-id=\"LP-Agriculture-7394-2d676cc3\" data-dig-label=\"2\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP-Agriculture\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">2<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;and investments for railways and seaports needed by 2070 are estimated at&nbsp;$284 billion&nbsp;and&nbsp;$110 billion, respectively.<sup><a href=\"#legal-3\" data-dig-id=\"LP-Agriculture-7394-2d676cc3\" data-dig-category=\"LP-Agriculture\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"3\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-block  pos-rel\" style=\"border-radius:0px\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-inner-block  section-inner\" style=\"border-radius:0x\">\n<h2 id=\"h-ag-is-a-nbsp-national-nbsp-priority\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-rbc-bright-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3eed089e28cff9d8bba233fa4a004d69\">Ag is a&nbsp;national&nbsp;priority<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;agriculture and agri-food&nbsp;sector&nbsp;contributes&nbsp;more than&nbsp;$150 billion&nbsp;to GDP&nbsp;and&nbsp;supports&nbsp;2.3 million jobs.&nbsp;It is&nbsp;export-dependent,&nbsp;sending&nbsp;more than&nbsp;$100 billion&nbsp;in agriculture&nbsp;products&nbsp;to international markets,&nbsp;making it the&nbsp;9<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;largest&nbsp;globally.<sup><a href=\"#legal-4\" data-dig-id=\"LP-Agriculture-7394-2d676cc3\" data-dig-category=\"LP-Agriculture\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"4\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ranking follows a&nbsp;decades-long story of&nbsp;crop&nbsp;productivity gains, both in efficiency and absolute terms.&nbsp;Since 2000, Canadian wheat&nbsp;production&nbsp;has grown by an&nbsp;annual&nbsp;average of&nbsp;3.9%, and canola&nbsp;yields&nbsp;by&nbsp;annual average&nbsp;3.4%, meaning farmers are getting more&nbsp;output&nbsp;from the same area of land.<sup><a href=\"#legal-5\" data-dig-id=\"LP-Agriculture-7394-2d676cc3\" data-dig-category=\"LP-Agriculture\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"5\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">5<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"everviz-4RAHaidtZ\" class=\"everviz-4RAHaidtZ\" data-view=\"graph\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity mar-t mob-mar-t mar-b mob-mar-b\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"everviz-qY4_ViXRi\" class=\"everviz-qY4_ViXRi\" data-view=\"graph\"><\/div>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;U.S.&nbsp;accounts for&nbsp;more than&nbsp;60% of Canada\u2019s&nbsp;agri-food&nbsp;exports<sup><a href=\"#legal-1\" data-dig-id=\"LP-Agriculture-7394-2d676cc3\" data-dig-category=\"LP-Agriculture\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"6\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">1<\/a><\/sup>.&nbsp;As&nbsp;Canada looks to become less reliant on a single customer&nbsp;across all sectors,&nbsp;more&nbsp;agri-food export sales&nbsp;will have&nbsp;to come from&nbsp;overseas markets in&nbsp;Asia&nbsp;and&nbsp;Europe,&nbsp;with&nbsp;commodities&nbsp;primarily&nbsp;shipping&nbsp;through the west coast.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Port of Vancouver moved a record 170&nbsp;million&nbsp;metric tons&nbsp;of cargo in 2025, 30&nbsp;million&nbsp;of which were bulk grains.&nbsp;Prince Rupert is also a growing western alternative&nbsp;corridor,&nbsp;handling&nbsp;26&nbsp;million&nbsp;metric&nbsp;tons of&nbsp;goods&nbsp;in 2025, up 14%&nbsp;from the year prior.<sup><a href=\"#legal-6\" data-dig-id=\"LP-Agriculture-7394-2d676cc3\" data-dig-category=\"LP-Agriculture\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"6\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">6<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-block  pos-rel\" style=\"border-radius:0px\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-inner-block  section-inner\" style=\"border-radius:0x\">\n<h2 id=\"h-exports-nbsp-are-nbsp-at-risk-nbsp-of-nbsp-disruption-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-rbc-bright-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-155edf72da3fb94f3c628447d3b3d000\">Exports&nbsp;are&nbsp;at risk&nbsp;of&nbsp;disruption&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"h-exports-nbsp-are-nbsp-at-risk-nbsp-of-nbsp-disruption-nbsp\">Canada\u2019s&nbsp;port and&nbsp;rail&nbsp;network&nbsp;is strained with&nbsp;several&nbsp;bottlenecks,&nbsp;with a&nbsp;history of disruptions:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 57-year-old Second Narrows Rail Bridge&nbsp;is&nbsp;the crossing for 50% of&nbsp;the country\u2019s&nbsp;grain&nbsp;production&nbsp;that moves through the port, and&nbsp;nearly a&nbsp;third of all cargo. This is leading some Canadian businesses to&nbsp;consider&nbsp;large terminal investments on U.S. shores, rather than Canada. Bulk Canadian grain has no such relief for overseas markets and moves&nbsp;almost exclusively&nbsp;through Canadian ports,&nbsp;creating vulnerabilities at the country\u2019s&nbsp;critical&nbsp;choke points.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Labour issues can also come into play.&nbsp;In 2024, a four-day Grain Workers Union strike cost the sector an estimated $35 million per day in stalled export shipments.<sup><a href=\"#legal-7\" data-dig-id=\"LP-Agriculture-7394-2d676cc3\" data-dig-category=\"LP-Agriculture\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"7\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">7<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;These vulnerabilities lead to lower profits for farmers and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.keepgrainmoving.ca\/_files\/ugd\/533d5a_048151fb311d49e29dc15100cfeb52d9.pdf\" data-dig-id=\"LP-Agriculture-7394-2d676cc3\" data-dig-label=\"more hesitation\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP-Agriculture\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">more hesitation<\/a>&nbsp;from international&nbsp;buyers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a significant disruption&nbsp;shuts&nbsp;down&nbsp;either&nbsp;Canadian National Railway&nbsp;Company (CN)&nbsp;or&nbsp;Canadian Pacific Kansas City&nbsp;(CPKC)&nbsp;railways for a single week, the estimated economic damage&nbsp;to the grain industry&nbsp;from lost sales, contract penalties and other costs&nbsp;could&nbsp;reach $250&nbsp;million<sup><a href=\"#legal-8\" data-dig-id=\"LP-Agriculture-7394-2d676cc3\" data-dig-label=\"8\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-category=\"LP-Agriculture\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">8<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-block  pos-rel\" style=\"border-radius:0px\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbc-section-inner-block  section-inner\" style=\"border-radius:0x\">\n<h2 id=\"h-new-nbsp-investments-nbsp-are-nbsp-helping-but-nbsp-much-nbsp-more-is-needed-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-rbc-bright-blue-tint-1-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8e37065b640e2a6c385629b97e7c6bb6\">New&nbsp;investments&nbsp;are&nbsp;helping, but&nbsp;much&nbsp;more is needed&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-rbc-list is-style-blue-disc\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The federal-government owned Trans Mountain Expansion Pipeline&nbsp;shows how new infrastructure investments in one&nbsp;sector&nbsp;can relieve pressure&nbsp;for&nbsp;another. When&nbsp;the oil&nbsp;pipeline capacity grew to 890,000&nbsp;barrels per day, Canadian crude-by-rail dropped to the lowest levels since 2012,<sup><a href=\"#legal-9\" data-dig-id=\"LP-Agriculture-7394-2d676cc3\" data-dig-category=\"LP-Agriculture\" data-dig-action=\"link click\" data-dig-label=\"9\" class=\"rbc-link-format\">9<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;freeing up capacity for&nbsp;Western grains, pulses, and oilseeds, and other commodities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-rbc-list-item\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investments like DP\u2019s&nbsp;World\u2019s&nbsp;Port Authority Rail Yard project&nbsp;\u2060at the Fraser Surrey Terminal in Surrey, British Columbia,&nbsp;aim to&nbsp;improve&nbsp;handling capacity and efficiency for agricultural exports.
