They&#8217;re all examples of Canada&#8217;s \u201cintangibles economy,&#8221; and they owe their strength in part to their robust intellectual property.<\/p>\n<p>These success stories hide a broader concern about Canada&#8217;s IP prowess. Canada sits behind Slovenia as 22nd on Bloomberg&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-01-18\/germany-breaks-korea-s-six-year-streak-as-most-innovative-nation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2020 Innovation Index<\/a>, which ranks the ability of economies to innovate based on criteria such as research and development spending, manufacturing capability and concentration of high-tech public companies. Last year, Microsoft alone registered <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/companies-won-a-record-number-of-patents-in-2019-with-microsoft-apple-and-ibm-leading-the-charge-212436667.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more patents<\/a> than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ic.gc.ca\/eic\/site\/cipointernet-internetopic.nsf\/eng\/wr04723.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">all of<\/a> Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Does the pandemic-driven downturn present an opportunity to step up our game?<\/p>\n<p>The tech community thinks so. In October, via the Council of Canadian Innovators, 133 founders <a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinnovators.medium.com\/its-time-for-nation-building-fb0e6fb4fa19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sent a letter<\/a> to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, making the case for a recovery strategy that encourages the commercialization of Canadian ideas and the development of ecosystems to help innovative companies grow. They argued IP is not only the world&#8217;s most valuable business asset, but continues to add value after its creation. That&#8217;s why keeping homegrown IP in Canada is especially important.<\/p>\n<p>Former BlackBerry co-CEO Jim Balsillie, who is chair of the Council of Canadian Innovators, is a leading voice on the importance of owning IP and has been pressing the Canadian government to create the prosperity strategy outlined in the CCI letter. \u201cWe have very ambitious, aggressive tech CEOs but an unambitious, passive policy community,&#8221; he said on the most recent episode of <i>Disruptors<\/i>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.simplecast.com\/f580ed5c-2874-4d73-850e-065be37c9e0f?dark=false\" width=\"100%\" height=\"200px\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\">&#8220;&gt;<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Listen on <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/ca\/podcast\/the-intangibles-economy-how-to-make-canada-an-ip-powerhouse\/id1332711400?i=1000500069829\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple Podcasts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/7ClG4Fw8VFviWvr2FZzojn?si=trm72cx7TEWkMAP-PMyvUA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spotify<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/rbc-disruptors.simplecast.com\/episodes\/the-intangibles-economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Simplecast<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Balsillie said Canada should take a page from smaller tech powerhouses who&#8217;ve specialized, like Israel (cybersecurity) or Singapore (microelectronics). And to take a more active role in governance, especially around data.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/innovation-science-economic-development\/news\/2018\/04\/government-of-canada-launches-intellectual-property-strategy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">evidence<\/a> that IP-intensive Canadian companies grow faster, export more, and continue to innovate.<\/p>\n<p>A key ingredient is talent\u2014no matter where it comes from. The pandemic has temporarily <a href=\"https:\/\/thoughtleadership.rbc.com\/the-canadian-dream-postponed-near-term-recovery-in-immigration-levels-is-unlikely\/\">dented immigration<\/a> to Canada, which prioritizes the world&#8217;s best and brightest.
