I&#8217;ve been lucky enough to visit three of the four Atlantic provinces in recent weeks, and here&#8217;s what I&#8217;ve been discussing with clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Population Growth Trends<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, let&#8217;s talk about the fading population growth wave. High oil prices and production have placed Newfoundland and Labrador at the top of our 2026 provincial growth table, while the Maritime provinces cluster in the upper half. For the Maritimes, the related mix of high population growth, construction, and government spending has driven above average growth in recent years. But those supports are fading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This pattern mirrors the rest of Canada, but the population story has been central in the Maritimes and the activity wave is cresting later. Combined with relatively limited tariff exposure, growth in the Maritime provinces should stay above average in 2026. By 2027, we expect the group to be solidly middle of the pack. Newfoundland and Labrador will also be there if oil prices normalize as markets expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fiscal Constraints<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, let&#8217;s talk about how Atlantic provinces have limited fiscal room to maneuver, probably capping further growth tailwinds from provincial government spending. Now, all four Atlantic provinces have seen fiscal deterioration, rising debt, structural deficits, and no balanced budget in sight. The oil price shock will probably tidy up Newfoundland and Labrador&#8217;s finances, at least for the current year. But then again, maybe not completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All Atlantic governments are looking at a new round of affordability measures and health spending increases. And let&#8217;s not forget that rising interest rates will eventually bite. It&#8217;s a pan-provincial story, but Atlantic provinces are more exposed given their reliance on fuels, older populations, and the highest provincial debt burdens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Provincial Growth Agenda<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet another provincial conundrum: a federal growth agenda could eventually lift provincial bottom lines, but benefits may be years away, and supporting that agenda may take fiscal capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Investment Opportunities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, let&#8217;s talk about those investment opportunities in Atlantic provinces. Major projects in energy, defence, and mining could be truly transformational for the region. It will take the Atlantic provinces rowing in the same direction to fully take advantage of it. There&#8217;s the stuff all governments need to do\u2014permitting speed, regulatory certainty, and the like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Labour Market Challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But let&#8217;s focus for a moment on Atlantic Canada&#8217;s labour challenge. Like for Canada as a whole, there is currently cyclical unemployment, but unemployment rates in Atlantic Canada are actually lower than normal at this point in the cycle, and further structural challenges are likely over the horizon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Big investments could need to draw on the resources of the entire region, but with an older workforce, high individual tax rates, high public sector employment, and cross-provincial barriers to labour movement, there is some work to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more information, visit RBC.com\/economics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We get lucky enough to visit different parts of the country and speak to clients about the opportunities and challenges they\u2019re facing in their regional economies.
