Diversity in Action

Leveraging Diversity

Diversity dynamics manifest themselves daily in our environment, whether they are work, school, or life-related. Have you ever felt different? When asked to describe how it feels to be different, most people say isolated, alone, inferior, not accepted or second-class. In other words, most people regard being different as a negative state. If presented with alternate possibilities, however, people do agree that being different can also mean being special, one-of-a-kind or exceptional. Unfortunately, the fact remains that being different is still often regarded as negative. One goal of leveraging diversity is to reframe differences from negatives into positives. Valuing someone who has a different point of view or a different experience can enhance problem solving and spark innovation. RBC is striving to see differences in people as valuable and potential assets. Organizations need people who can look at a problem and see it from a different perspective.

At RBC, our diversity work is based on valuing differences and inclusion, whether we are referring to our employees, clients or our different business platforms.

The definitions we use for Diversity and Inclusion are;

Diversity: differences in people (ethnicity, gender, age, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, education, religion, etc.,) as well as differences in our thought processes, work experiences, personalities, life styles and cultures.

Inclusion: inclusionary work environments and cultures provide everyone with equal access to information, opportunities and involvement. At RBC, this is about enhanced communication, respect for different points of view and innovation.

Diversity at RBC is comprised of three elements that intersect and overlap:

Three elements of diversity

Workforce Diversity

At RBC, it's all about creating workplaces across every one of our businesses where employees can realize their full potential, achieve their aspirations and make significant contributions while developing their own unique personal abilities. To achieve workforce diversity, we are continuously taking steps to ensure that differences are valued and leveraged and that every member of the RBC team understands and appreciates that flexibility is a key attribute of how we work best with one another. We understand that it is imperative that we are perceived by all potential employees as open and forward thinking organizations which values and embraces diversity. Through our success in building and maintaining this image, we have been able to recruit and retain unique people with unique perspectives – our most valued asset.

Marketplace Diversity

A global organization, we need to ensure that we develop the skills, attitudes and competencies necessary to identify and meet the diverse needs of our clients, markets and communities in Canada, the United States and around the world. When this approach to diversity is in place, it can only serve to support business strategies by enhancing acquisitions and alliances while promoting the growth of our existing operations. Not only is it the right way to operate – it's also the right way to do business. We gain a significant competitive advantage as our understanding of diverse communities and clients allows us to tap into new markets and serve existing ones more fully. By treating clients the way they expect to be treated, and helping them to realize their goals and aspirations, we all succeed.

Organizational Effectiveness

No matter what your business, when you remove restrictive barriers, the results will enable the sharing of ideas and information to increase productivity. With a focus on organizational effectiveness, we've created an environment where our various businesses, divisions, geographies and departments can interact and work across structures synergistically. We've leveraged the knowledge and synergies of all member companies, resulting in growth for stakeholders and shareholders, and created and rewarding and educational working environment.

Thinking of bringing your unique perspectives and skills to work with RBC? Be assured that when you join the RBC team, your differences will be valued as much as your contributions and experience. Celebrate your individuality as an integral member of RBC Financial Group.
