Joël's Bio

Joël is a 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games semi-finalist in Athletics (3000m steeplechase). During his 17 years on the National Team he has also won a 1999 Pan American Games gold medal, 2003 Pan American Games silver medal, and nine Canadian Championship titles. He hopes to wrap up his competitive career with an appearance at the 3000m steeplechase in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Athletic Goals

2008 Olympic Games in Beijing – finalist. That would be a great way to wrap up a long career, but I hope to keep on running for the rest of my life.

Favourite Olympic/Sporting Moment

That feeling you get when stepping on the track minutes before the race at the Olympic Games (or World Championships or other major event) is the best and the worst you can ever feel in your sporting life – something you cannot get elsewhere in life!

Best Advice You've Ever Received

Being an RBC Athlete means...

For the past 15-20 years, I have been a self-coached athlete in an individual sport, training all alone in a remote part of Canada. For me, RBC Olympians represent something that I have had very little of throughout my long athletic career, and the thing that I have missed most throughout all those years: a TEAM.
