Gary's Bio

Gary summoned the attention of the world when he nabbed a silver medal in the 800m event at the 2007 World Track and Field Championships. A five time Canadian champion in his discipline and member of the 2004 Canadian Olympic Team, his ultimate goal is to reach the Olympic podium in 2008.

Athletic Goals

My ultimate goal is to reach the podium at the 2008 Olympics as well as help bring the sport of athletics to new popularity heights in Canada and beyond. In addition, I would like to further improve my personal best time in the 800 metre (1:43.93).

Favourite Olympic/Sporting Moment

The greatest moment of my career came when I achieved a long-time goal of reaching the podium at a major international event; earning a silver medal at the world track and field championships (2007).

Best Advice You've Ever Received

To focus on what I am doing in the moment. Sometimes, as an athlete, I think it is too easy to always worry about the future (post sport, etc.). A good friend of mine told me to pour all my energy in the moment and focus on what I am doing now as that is the only way you can succeed in the now.

Being an RBC Athlete means...

Being an RBC Olympian means that I am now given a voice to promote sport and education in Canada—something that I feel is sometimes overlooked in our country. It means promoting the Olympic values and strengthening partnerships and awareness within the community and the Olympic domain.
