Fraud Scheme - Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Warning

W-8BEN tax forms are used in the United States to establish appropriate tax withholding for foreign individuals. Fraudulent copies of this form are being sent directly via fax to our non-resident clients. The form is accompanied by a cover letter claiming it is from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The letter requests the recipient return the completed form by fax. The form requests information including financial account numbers, mother's maiden name, PINs and passport numbers.

The IRS is aware of this scheme and has published a warning on their website confirming the legitimate form does not ask for this type of information and advising recipients not to respond to the fax.
