What is social engineering attack?

A social engineering attack is usually conducted by an outside hacker who will use a variety of psychological tricks on a computer user to get the information they need in order to access a computer or network. For example, pretending to be from a company's technical support team, the social engineer may phone an employee and ask for their user name and password in order to "check" a network problem. In reality, social engineers are very good at getting the information they want by gaining their victim's trust and making realistic and reasonable requests. At RBC, we will never ask you for this information and you should never divulge it. Pay attention to any dubious contacts, or suspicious security-related messages from your browser. When in doubt, do not proceed. It pays to be suspicious
