Wetland education gets support from RBC

Shubenacadie, NS, June 10, 2008 — Wetland education in Canada got a boost today.

Ducks Unlimited (DU) Canada was awarded a $100,000 RBC Blue Water Project Leadership grant for its elementary school education program, Project Webfoot.

Project Webfoot provides wetland education through a curriculum-based in-class component and a field trip component. Since DU Canada began the program in 1997 over 300,000 students have learned more about wetland conservation. RBC has been supporting Project Webfoot since 2004.

"DU Canada is pleased to make this announcement here, at the Greenwing Legacy Interpretive Centre, and thank RBC for its ongoing support of wetland education," said Merebeth Switzer, National Education Coordinator for DU Canada. "Two of the eight Canadian cities being supported by this donation are in Atlantic Canada so it is fitting to kick of the campaign here."

The Atlantic portion of this latest donation will allow 750 children in Atlantic Canada to take part in Project Webfoot and learn about the importance of wetland conservation, which is a key priority for RBC under its Blue Water Project.

"Project Webfoot combines education and the environment; it focuses on watershed issues; it's hands-on and aligns with school curriculum; and most importantly for the kids, it's fun!" says Teresa Perri, RBC's regional vice president for Central N.S. "We're proud to extend our long standing partnership with Ducks Unlimited Canada through this Leadership Grant and very pleased to be making this national announcement here in Atlantic Canada."

The RBC Blue Water Project is a wide-ranging, multi-year program to help foster a culture of water stewardship in Canada and abroad, so that people have clean fresh water today and tomorrow. The goal is to contribute to a future of sustainable water resources worldwide.

RBC presented an additional $3,000 toward three local DU Canada chapters. Local chapters are volunteer driven and they put on dinner events and auctions that raise much needed funds for wetland conservation.
