RBC joins Global Business Coalition on AIDS
July, 2006 — RBC has joined the Global Business
Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GBC), an alliance of over 200 international
companies dedicated to combating the AIDS epidemic. The GBC
acts as a central hub for businesses that want to make a difference,
helping them use their products and expertise in the fight
against HIV/AIDS.
"We recognize that AIDS continues to have a devastating
impact not only on people's lives and local communities, but
also on the global economy," said Stephen Voisin, Executive
Director, RBC Foundation.
The medical community predicts as many as 100 million cases
of HIV worldwide by the year 2010.
RBC is a long-time supporter of AIDS-related organizations,
and was one of the first companies in Canada to support CANFAR,
the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research in 1991. Since that
time the company has donated over $650,000 to CANFAR.
"With Toronto hosting the XVI International AIDS Conference,
we felt the time was right to recommit ourselves to the cause,"
said Voisin. "We hope both the Conference and the GBC
will catalyze companies around the world to become more involved."
RBC considers its long-term support of health and education
to be an investment in the current and future well-being of
our employees, clients and communities. Over one-quarter of
the RBC Foundation's annual budget is dedicated to health
related causes, with significant gifts and pledges to hospital
campaigns, outreach and support centres and medical research.
The company's employees also generously volunteer their time
to health care organizations and charities around the world.
