Reporting
Increasingly, companies are expected to report on their environmental,
social and ethical impact, in addition to their financial
performance. Yet stakeholders such as employees, consumers,
investors, regulators, community partners, analysts and students
have a range of opinions on what and how much companies should
report and the manner in which they should provide sustainability
information.
RBC has adopted a multi-pronged approach to sustainability
reporting. Our goal is to provide an appropriate level of
detail on issues that are relevant to each stakeholder in
the format that is most appropriate to them. As such, we provide
sustainability information in a number of places, rather than
in one long, printed 'sustainability report.' We believe that
this approach is more useful for stakeholders and a better
use of our resources, too. We rely on stakeholder input and
global best practices in determining the relevant issues and
formats for each stakeholder. All our sustainability disclosure
is reviewed by our internal Legal, Compliance and Finance
departments for completeness and accuracy. At present, we
do not have our sustainability reporting externally assured
or verified.
RBC's sustainability reporting includes:
- Corporate Responsibility website:
(for consumers, employees, NGOs, community partners,
students and corporate responsibility practitioners)
This web site is the cornerstone of our sustainability reporting.
It has been organized into categories commonly used by other
companies, providing at-a-glance information for the casual
reader, and drill-down information for people and groups
who want more details. The site also contains a GRI
Index (a guide based on the reporting guidelines of
the Global Reporting Initiative) showing where all of RBC's
GRI-related sustainability information can be found. The
index, and the information it points to, constitute a report
which qualifies for GRI's G3
Application Level C.
- Corporate Responsibility
Report: (for consumers, employees, NGOs, community
partners and regulators) is a year-end print and online
(PDF) review of RBC's approach to business integrity, our
economic impact, as well as our impact on the workplace,
the environment and communities. The Canadian version of
this report also contains our annual Public Accountability
Statement. We print a very limited number of copies of our
Corporate Responsibility Report for regulatory filings and
requests.
- Corporate Responsibility
Review: (for consumers and employees) This summary
of our Corporate Responsibility Report covers the year's
highlights. It is available online and in print, and is
distributed widely through our branch network.
- Annual
report and proxy circulars: (for investors and analysts)
provide information on a regular basis about our financial
performance, as well as details related to corporate governance,
risk management and corporate responsibility.
- Sustainability survey submissions: (for institutional
investors and SRI analysts) RBC responds fully to information
requests from a growing number of socially responsible investment
analysts and researchers worldwide. We use the OneReport
system to respond to a select number of national and international
surveys, and strive to respond to other information requests
when they are relevant to our markets and shareholders.
