RBC and CHEO announce running event to benefit youth mental health

Go further for youth mental health

RBC representatives and CHEO staff gathered to announce that a new run in support of youth mental health will be added to the region’s calendar of running events in 2017.

OTTAWA, October 14, 2016 - This morning, RBC representatives and CHEO staff gathered to announce that a new run in support of youth mental health will be added to the region’s calendar of running events in 2017. The inaugural edition of the RBC Race for the Kids in Ottawa will take place on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at Wesley Clover Parks, 401 Corkstown Road.

This new event is part of RBC’s global race series which aims to raise funds in support of local programs that contribute to the mental well-being of youth. Funds raised by the Ottawa Race will benefit mental health programs at CHEO.

“We are thrilled to be bringing the RBC Race for the Kids to Ottawa,” said Tina Sarellas, Regional President, RBC Royal Bank. “We know that so many young people today are struggling with their mental health. By partnering with our friends at CHEO, the RBC Race for the Kids hopes to reduce barriers while increasing access to programs and services which support youth and their families right here in our region.”

The RBC Race for the Kids is a family-oriented event that will feature a 10K timed run, 5K timed run, and a Family Fun Run.  All of the closed courses will make their way through beautiful Wesley Clover Parks - an innovative, four-season outdoor recreation and learning hub located in National Capital’s Greenbelt that encircles the City of Ottawa. Wesley Clover Parks offers a naturally beautiful and safe space for participants of all ages.

Registration will open on May 1, 2017 and participants will be encouraged to raise funds in support of mental health programs at CHEO. “Over the last five years CHEO has seen a seventy five percent increase in mental health emergency department visits,” said Kevin Keohane, President and CEO of the CHEO Foundation. “RBC’s ongoing commitment to the well-being of children and their decision to partner with CHEO will make a difference in the lives of so many kids and teens that need help. We can’t thank RBC enough for bringing the RBC Race for the Kids to Ottawa.”

Since its launch in 2008, RBC Race for the Kids has raised in excess of $26.5 million for children’s charities around the globe. With the addition of the event in Ottawa the event now takes place in 12 cities in six different countries.
