RBC employees join patients, families, schools and fun runners from across London to raise vital funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital through the RBC Race for the Kids

LONDON, U.K., May 16, 2016 - The seventh annual RBC Race for the Kids took place at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Sunday, 15 May.

The special 5k fun run saw more than 7,000 participants including 19 schools, 660 companies, 855 teams, 446 patients and 70 members of hospital staff from across London run, walk, scoot and wheel their way around the course to help to raise vital funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Five-year-old patient Olivia Alderson, who has a rare brain tumour to start the inclusive event from a platform above the start line. Olivia’s family and friends took part to say thank you for the care the she is receiving.

This is the first year the race has taken place at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the event is expected to raise £1 million which will go towards the hospital’s vital redevelopment. Part of a programme of building work which will see old, cramped wards transformed into brand new, state-of-the-art facilities including space for a parent to stay by a child's bedside and privacy with en-suite facilities, a kitchen area and play rooms for patients and siblings to enjoy. After the race fun runners were rewarded with medals and got the chance to enjoy some family entertainment.

Tim Johnson, Chief Executive, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, said: “We're delighted to celebrate another successful RBC Race for the Kids. It is a fantastic event with so many families returning year upon year and so many newcomers. The money raised will help us make a huge difference to patients and their families. Thank you to everyone who took part, we’re hugely grateful and we hope even more people will join us next year.”

Royal Bank of Canada supported the race as title sponsors and with over 1,800 members of staff and their friends and families taking part in the event. The bank has supported the hospital since 2010 and has raised nearly £2 million thanks to staff fundraising, title sponsorship and generous donations.
