University-bound student surprises parents with $20,000 thank you

TORONTO, September 1, 2015 -  RBC and the Student Life Network are pleased to announce the winner of the ‘Thank You Mom and Dad’ contest. From amongst more than 50,000 entries, Taylor Losak, an 18 year old student attending Queens University in the fall, took home the prize and was able to make her dad’s birthday extra special this year.

The contest, which ran from April 7 to June 30, invited students across Canada to share their stories of thanks to their parents, guardians and mentors for their support during their school journey.

Students across the country demonstrated how fortunate and grateful they are to have supportive people in their lives by creatively sharing their heart-warming stories – whether it was through words, videos, photos or social media – and were eligible to be the randomly selected winner of the $20,000 prize.

“It was great to see so many inspiring stories being shared through the ‘Thank You Mom and Dad’ contest. While only one winner could be chosen, students were still able to use the contest as a way to say thank you to the most important people in their lives” said Mandy Mail, director, Student Banking.

“Countless sacrifices”
In her submission, Taylor writes: “[my parents] have made countless sacrifices for my sister and I and I have always wanted the chance to give back to them in some way. It is difficult to put into words the admiration and love I have for my parents and I would be grateful to share this gift with them.”

At her dad’s birthday bbq, Taylor surprised her parents with a cheque for $20,000. “I entered the contest never really expecting to win, I just wanted to use this as an opportunity to say thank you to my mom and dad for supporting me over the years and always pushing me to reach my goals,” Taylor explains. “I am grateful to RBC and the Student Life Network for creating this contest and giving students like me the chance to say thank you through this incredible gift.”

Taylor’s dad, John Losak was overcome with emotion on his birthday. “What a surprise and a shock,” John adds. “I was overwhelmed with pride when I read the letter that Taylor wrote and it was so nice to be able to share this incredible surprise with my entire family. Thank you RBC and the Student Life Network for providing such unique opportunities for students.'
