As a member of the RBC Group Executive since February 2007, George Lewis is one of eight executives responsible for setting the overall strategic direction of RBC, Canada's largest bank, specifically responsible for RBC Wealth Management and Insurance segments.
As Group Head, Wealth Management & Insurance, Mr. Lewis leads the RBC businesses that serve the wealth management needs of affluent and high net worth clients globally, as well as businesses that provide asset management solutions to all client segments. These include RBC Dominion Securities, Canada's leader in wealth management for affluent and high net worth investors; RBC Phillips, Hager & North Investment Counsel, Canada's leading discretionary investment counselling business; RBC Estate and Trust Services; RBC Wealth Management - U.S., the seventh largest full-service brokerage firm in the U.S.; RBC Wealth Management - International, RBC Wealth Management - Asia and Switzerland; and RBC Global Asset Management, which is Canada's largest private-sector asset manager and mutual fund company and includes Phillips, Hager & North in Canada (acquired 2008) and Global Asset Management (U.S.) and BlueBay Asset Management (U.K. - acquired 2011). Mr. Lewis is also chairman of RBC Global Asset Management Inc., and co-manages the RBC Global Dividend Growth Fund and RBC International Dividend Growth Fund.
Mr. Lewis also oversees RBC Insurance, which through its operating entities, provides a wide range of travel, life, health, home, auto, wealth and reinsurance products and solutions, as well as creditor and business insurance services, to individual, business and group clients. It is one of the largest Canadian bank-owned insurance group of companies, and among the fastest growing insurance organizations in Canada.
From July 2000 to May 2008, Mr. Lewis was chief executive officer of RBC Asset Management, which under his leadership became Canada's largest single mutual fund company (RBC Funds) and one of Canada's largest asset management firms. From 2003 to 2007, he also served as head of Products for the Canadian Personal and Business Banking segment, as well as its Wealth Management unit. From 1998 to 2000, Mr. Lewis was managing director, head of Institutional Equity with RBC Capital Markets, responsible for global institutional equity sales, trading and research. He was previously an investment banker, a top-rated equity research analyst and director of Research with RBC Capital Markets.
Mr. Lewis earned a Master of Business Administration degree with distinction from Harvard University. He obtained the professional designation of chartered accountant while working with Arthur Andersen & Co. and a Bachelor of Commerce degree with high distinction from Trinity College at the University of Toronto. Mr. Lewis is a CFA charterholder and certified by the Institute of Corporate Directors.
Mr. Lewis is a current member and Past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Foundation. In addition, Mr. Lewis is a member of the Board of the Canadian Film Centre and a current member and Past Chair of the Bishop's Company of the Anglican Diocese of Toronto, as well as a Patron and past member of the Cabinet of the United Way of Greater Toronto. He is also a member of the Board of Directors and Chair of the Audit and Finance Committee of Ontario Power Generation Inc.
Mr. Lewis lives in Toronto with his wife and two children.
