David P. O'Brien has served on the board of Royal Bank of
Canada since May 7, 1996 and was appointed chairman of the
board on February 27, 2004.
Mr. O'Brien is currently Chairman of the Board of EnCana
Corporation, a position he has held since April 5, 2002.
Mr. O'Brien began his career as an Associate and, later,
Partner of Ogilvy Renault in 1967. In 1978 he joined Petro-Canada,
where he held the position of Executive Vice President and
other senior management positions. Mr. O'Brien joined PanCanadian
Petroleum in 1990, where he served as Chairman, President
and Chief Executive Officer until 1995. He was appointed President
and Chief Operating Officer of Canadian Pacific Limited in
1995, and in 1996, was named the company's Chairman, President
and Chief Executive Officer. From October 2001 to April 2002,
Mr. O'Brien was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of PanCanadian
Energy Corporation, which merged with Alberta Energy Company
Ltd. in April 2002 to form EnCana Corporation.
In addition to the boards he chairs, Mr. O'Brien's directorships
include Fairmont Hotel and Resorts, Inco Limited, TransCanada
PipeLines Limited, Molson Inc., and the C.D. Howe Institute.
Mr. O'Brien graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor
of Civil Law in 1965, and a B.A. (Honours Economics) from
Loyola College (Montreal) in 1962.
Mr. O'Brien holds an Honourary Doctorate of Civil Law from
Bishops University in 1998, and an Honourary Bachelor of Applied
Business and Entrepreneurship (International) from Mount Royal
College in 2000.
Mr. O'Brien, married with three children, lives in Calgary,
Alberta.
