RBC named one of Canada's Greenest Employers

TORONTO, April 16, 2009 — RBC (RY on TSX and NYSE) has been named one of Canada's Greenest Employers for 2009, according to a competition organized by the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers.

"I am proud that RBC and our employees continue to be recognized for our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint and having environmentally responsible business activities, products and services," said Barb Stymiest, group head, Strategy, Treasury & Corporate Services, RBC.

In 2007, RBC launched the RBC Environmental Blueprint, detailing a wide range of initiatives, policies, procedures and services related to environmental sustainability. In 2007, RBC also announced the creation of the RBC Blue Water Project, an innovative 10-year, $50 million grant program to support projects dedicated to watershed protection and access to clean drinking water around the world. Over the year, RBC has committed $13.2 million in multi-year donations to 39 organizations working in these areas.

"RBC has taken a leadership role in demonstrating how a large organization can find practical and significant ways to incorporate environmental considerations in its business," says Richard Yerema, managing editor at Mediacorp Canada Inc.

Now in its third year, this special designation recognizes employers that lead the nation in making environmental values part of their organizational culture. Winners of this competition have developed exceptional earth-friendly initiatives and are attracting employees and customers because of their environmental leadership.

RBC is proud of its long track record of caring for the environment, and the awards and recognition received for its commitment to environmental sustainability. In 2009, RBC was named one of the world's top 100 sustainable companies. RBC is also listed on the 2008-2009 Dow Jones Sustainability Index, recognizing the world's financial, social and environmental corporate leaders, as well as the Jantzi Social Index and the FTSE4Good Index. RBC was among 67 companies and one of only 18 financial institutions worldwide named to the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index 2008, a prestigious honour roll of world leaders at understanding and managing the financial risks and opportunities resulting from climate change.
