Two students from Atlantic Canada are among the recipients of RBC Financial Lifeskills Scholarships

Scholarships awarded to support student success in higher education

HALIFAX, November 29, 2006 — RBC Royal Bank today announced this year's winners of the RBC Royal Bank's Financial Lifeskills Scholarships. Each of the 10 award winners, including two students from Atlantic Canada, will receive a scholarship worth $2,006 to be used toward tuition and school related expenses for their first year of college or university.

"The transition from high school to college or university is a huge, and often challenging, step - and financing that transition is very expensive," says Judith Murchison, senior manager, Client Strategy, RBC Royal Bank. "We are absolutely delighted to offer these scholarships as one way to help lessen the financial burden on students, and help them fulfill their academic and career aspirations."

The RBC Financial Lifeskills Scholarships are designed for students in any academic stream pursuing studies in any field. To be eligible applicants must have demonstrated some involvement in any or all of the following areas: community leadership; extra-curricular activities; special endeavours or circumstances; volunteer service; outside interests and/or hobbies; and career and educational objectives.

This year's student award winners from Atlantic Canada are:

  • KRISTY WAALDERBROS - Amherst, Nova Scotia
    Kristy graduated from Amherst Regional High and is now pursuing a welding diploma at the Nova Scotia Community College.

  • MARK PRINCE - New Glasgow, Nova Scotia
    A recent graduate from North Nova Education Centre, Mark is taking a Bachelor of Music with a major in Flute at the University of Western Ontario.

This year's other award winners are:

  • CONOR STUART - Richmond, British Columbia
    A recent graduate from Hugh McRoberts Secondary, Conor is now pursuing a Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Engineering at the University of British Columbia.

  • EMILY NEWTON - Vancouver, British Columbia
    Emily graduated from Crofton House School in Vancouver and is now enrolled in the school of Physical and Health Education with a major in filmmaking at Queen's University.

  • ALAN LEUNG - Calgary, Alberta
    Alan is a recent graduate from John G. Diefenbaker High School in Calgary, and is majoring in Computer Science at the University of Calgary.

  • NATASHA SCHMALE - Okotoks, Alberta
    A recent graduate from The Centre for Learning at Home, Natasha is enrolled in the Journalism Arts Program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.

  • TYLER COWAN - Oakville, Ontario
    Tyler graduated from Abbey Park High School and is now attending the Image Arts Program, majoring in Film Studies at Ryerson University.

  • ALLYSON PARKER - Cobourg, Ontario
    A recent graduate from Cobourg District Collegiate Institute, Allyson is enrolled in Biological Sciences with a major in Wildlife Biology and Ecology, at the University of Guelph.

  • AUDREY LALONDE - Montreal, Quebec
    A recent graduate from College de Maisonneuve, Audrey is enrolled in College de Rosemont in Montreal for a year of social studies and will commence Ambulance Paramedics next year.

  • GUILLAUME LANOIE - St. Hyacinthe, Quebec
    Guillaume graduated from St. Hyacinthe CEGEP and is now enrolled in a Bachelor of Accounting Sciences at the Universite de Quebec a Trois Rivieres.

"We know that today's students will be tomorrow's leaders and we consider our long-term support of education a way to invest in Canada's future prosperity," added Murchison.

RBC continues to be a strong supporter of education. Over 30 per cent of RBC's annual donation budget is devoted to education, including major gifts to universities and colleges.

In order to qualify for the RBC Financial Lifeskills Scholarships, students must be in their final year of high school, or completing their final year of CEGEP in Quebec, and must maintain a minimum grade average of 65 per cent. Students must also be registered or have been accepted at a college or university in Canada for the Fall/Winter session.
