RBC Canadian Painting Competition
Backgrounder - 2006
RBC recognizes the vital role arts play in enriching people's
lives. From plays and concerts to public learning, RBC's support
focuses on arts activities that contribute to the cultural
fabric of communities. RBC's corporate art collection, which
is shared in RBC offices and branches across Canada, and regularly
loaned to public exhibitions, includes more than 4,000 works
collected over the past hundred years.
The RBC Canadian Painting Competition is celebrating its
eighth year in 2006. Established in 1999, with the Canadian
Art Foundation, the competition recognizes and supports exceptional
skill and talent in the medium of painting and distinguishes
15 up-and-coming artists representing Eastern, Central and
Western Canada. From this talented group of 15 semi-finalists,
one national winner and two honorable mentions are selected.
Following the competition, many artists-winners and semi-finalists
alike-have signed with prestigious Canadian galleries for
representation, are exhibited in public galleries and museums,
have received international attention, and have been purchased
for private and corporate collections.
The RBC Canadian Painting Competition received 1,500 entries
from more than 600 artists across Canada.
The Canadian Art Foundation plays a pivotal role as competition
adjudicator, organizing three regional jury panels comprised
of highly esteemed members of the arts community. A national
jury will decide on the national winners and will include
representatives from the regional jury panels. The national
jury will be announced in the fall.
- From the 15 shortlisted candidates (five per region),
three winners will be selected. These regional winners become
eligible for the national prizes.
- One top prize of $25,000 and two honourable mention prizes
of $15,000 will be awarded to the three artists in Toronto
on September 19, 2006.
- The three winning works of art become part of RBC's corporate
art collection, which is shared with clients and employees
across Canada.
- All 15 semi-finalists will be part of a national public
touring exhibition at prominent galleries in Toronto, Kitchener/Waterloo,
Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver.
