Banking on security awarenessRBC Royal Bank initiates online security public awareness campaign
TORONTO, May 24, 2006 — Many more Canadian consumers
would be taking advantage of the convenience of online banking
if they were aware of how secure and well protected online
transactions are. To help these consumers better understand
how to safeguard online banking transactions, RBC Royal Bank
today is launching an online security public awareness campaign,
and standing behind its commitment to online security with
a 100 per cent guarantee.
"Our guarantee is to fully reimburse clients for any
funds removed from their accounts with us as a result of unauthorized
transactions through online banking," explained James
McGuire, vice-president, Online Strategy and Client Experience
for RBC Royal Bank. "Our own records and industry research
show that a small number of unauthorized transactions ever
occur online. We want people to feel comfortable choosing
online banking, knowing that their money is safe."
Through its online security awareness campaign, RBC is reminding
everyone who goes online of the importance of following safe
computing practices. "Anyone banking online should follow
some straightforward precautions," emphasized McGuire.
"Through our Guarantee, we're asking our clients to take
a few simple steps, including safeguarding their passwords,
closing their online sessions properly, and letting us know
right away if they notice any unusual activity in their accounts.
On our part, we take responsibility for ensuring our online
transactions with them are secure, and for reimbursing clients
for any unauthorized transactions."
The RBC's online security public awareness campaign materials
include an Online Banking Guide to Security & Privacy
- a comprehensive resource that looks at security tools and
safe computing practices - as well as the RBC Online Security
Quiz. In addition, copies of the brochure "Straight Talk
About Financial Fraud" are available at any RBC Royal
Bank branch, and all three resources can be found by visiting
www.rbcroyalbank.com.
