RBC announces call for entries as it kicks off the eighth annual Canadian Painting Competition

RBC awards $55,000 to emerging Canadian artists — largest prize-money in Canadian painting

TORONTO, March 1, 2006 — RBC Financial Group, with the support of the Canadian Art Foundation, today announced the call for entries for the 2006 RBC Canadian Painting Competition. Winners will be announced in September; with the national winner receiving $25,000, and two honourable mentions each receiving $15,000.

With a total of $55,000 in prize money, the RBC Canadian Painting Competition has the largest prize of any painting competition in Canada. Semi-finalists in the competition will see their work displayed at prominent art galleries across the country and featured in Canadian Art magazine.

Now in its eighth year, the competition focuses on discovering great artistic talent from across the country. RBC works closely with the Canadian Art Foundation to recognize the skill and talent of Canada's emerging artists and to provide them the opportunity for national exposure. As the competition adjudicator, the Canadian Art Foundation oversees the judging of the works by a selected panel of distinguished members of the visual arts community.

"We've collaborated with RBC for many years to deliver a first-class competition and recognize that RBC is an important contributor to the Canadian visual arts community," said Melony Ward, executive director, Canadian Art Foundation. "The competition provides an opportunity for emerging artists to have their work recognized at a national level and helps to build the careers of many Canadian artists."

Entries must be submitted by May 14, 2006. Details and rules of the competition may be found at www.rbc.com/paintingcompetition. The submitted works will be short-listed to 15 semi-finalists by independent panels of regional judges. All regional jurors come together to determine one national winner and two honourable mentions in September in Toronto, kicking off the national touring exhibition. In addition to Toronto, the national tour will exhibit the works of all 15 semi-finalists at prominent galleries in Kitchener, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver. For dates and locations of the RBC Canadian Painting Competition tour visit www.rbc.com/paintingcompetition. All finalists will be featured in Canadian Art magazine and on the web at www.rbc.com/paintingcompetition and at www.canadianart.ca.

About the RBC Canadian Painting Competition
Established in 1999, the RBC Canadian Painting Competition is a tribute to Canada's artistic talent. The goal of the competition is to support and nurture Canadian visual artists early in their career by providing them with a forum to display their artistic talent to the country and hopefully open doors to future opportunity. An investment in Canadian culture and the visual arts community, the competition will award one national prize of $25,000 and two honourable mentions will receive $15,000 each. Along with past winners, the winning paintings of 2006 will become part of RBC Financial Group's Canadian art collection comprised of more than 4,000 works of distinguished art collected over the past hundred years. Various paintings from the RBC collection have been exhibited in museums, enabling more Canadians to enjoy these wonderful works. Presently, "Irish Point" and "Self Portrait: Who is this Sir Mummings" by Christopher Pratt are currently on loan to the National Gallery of Canada to mark Pratt's 70th birthday in 2005. The Christopher Pratt exhibition is touring to Halifax, St. John's, Winnipeg and Quebec City through the National Gallery of Canada's Travelling Exhibitions Program.
