Asian relief effort Extra $100,000 to
Match Public Donations & $50,000 for Immigrant ResettlementTORONTO,
December 31, 2004 - RBC Financial Group today announced it is adding $150,000
to its original contribution of $100,000 towards relief and resettlement efforts
for the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami in South Asia. RBC
will match all donations up to a total of $100,000 brought in by the public in
Canada, and its employees worldwide, to RBC locations for the Red Cross relief
fund. This amount is on top of the $100,000 donation announced by RBC earlier
this week. In addition to its contribution to the Canadian Red Cross for efforts
abroad, RBC will also provide $50,000 toward the future resettlement in Canada
of immigrants from affected areas. "In light of reports that show the
impact of the disaster is far greater than expected we have decided to increase
our support," said Gordon Nixon, President & CEO of RBC Financial Group.
"We would also like to encourage our employees, our clients and the general
public to increase their support. This is why we are offering to match their donations
up to a total of $100,000." Anyone who wants to contribute to the "Canadian
Red Cross South Asian Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund" is encouraged to
visit any RBC Royal Bank branch in Canada. RBC Royal Bank clients can also donate
by phone by calling 1-800-ROYAL-11. The Canadian Red Cross will issue official
tax receipts for donations of $10.00 or more. Monies raised will be used to provide
relief items such as food, clean water, shelter materials, blankets and clothing
on an urgent basis where the need is the greatest.
