Transportation and the Environment
Most of us know that traffic congestion increases greenhouse emissions and air, water and soil pollution. Idling and slow moving vehicles caught in stop and go traffic use more fuel and, as a result, release five times more emissions than trips made at optimal speeds. Fortunately, alternative modes of transportation, from public transit to hybrid vehicles are increasing in popularity worldwide. Reconsidering the way you use transportation is one of the most effective ways you can make a difference to the environment.
Making a Difference on the Go
Commuting is a way of life for many Canadians, and driving is often the most convenient way of getting to work, school, grocery stores and weekend getaways. If you must drive, the easiest way to make an environmentally sound transportation choice is carpooling. You can reduce emissions every day by carpooling on your commute or with other families to take your children to school or to extra-curricular activities.
If you're considering purchasing a new car, a hybrid vehicle can be a more environmentally sound choice than a traditional car – although there are other high-efficiency low emission vehicles that are not necessarily hybrids. Hybrid cars use a combination of gas and electricity that produces fewer emissions of greenhouse gases and pollutants. We will recognize all RBC Hybrid car loans with a special donation on behalf of our clients.
Of course, if you look at your transportation habits closely you may discover instances where you don't actually need your car. Using public transit, biking or walking when possible is often just as convenient as driving, especially when your destination is close by—and you won't have to worry about parking.
