Retailers Enabling a Greener Economy

Are you interested in finding out what leading Canadian retailers are doing about sustainability? Re-envisioning retail: Creating business value while leading the way toward more sustainable living, the latest report in RBC's series on Business and the Environment, is designed to help Canadian retailers better understand the business risks and opportunities associated with environmental sustainability. It highlights retailers from across Canada who have already benefitted from taking a greener approach to retail management. These success stories show how simple practices can help retailers reduce costs, increase efficiency, enhance reputation and become more competitive.

School's Out For Summer - See Our Report Card

We have released our 2011 Environmental Blueprint Report Card that tracks our progress against 44 environmental commitments made in the RBC Environmental Blueprint. This 11-page document highlights our progress in four categories:

School's Out For Summer - See Our Report Card
  • Reducing our environmental footprint
  • Promoting environmentally responsible business activities
  • Offering environmental products and services
  • Sustaining the RBC Environmental Blueprint

Launched in 2007, the RBC Environmental Blueprint was always intended to be a five year environmental plan. Keep an eye out for the RBC Environmental Blueprint 2.0, set for launch this fall!

Greening a PGA Golf Tournament

RBC, the Heritage Foundation and Sea Pines Resort implemented a number of environmental initiatives at the 2012 RBC Heritage at Harbor Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. These included:

  • Purchased 150 megawatt hours of Green-e certified power to match the amount of electricity used by the clubhouse, hospitality areas, on-course scoreboards and broadcasting towers.
  • Set-up of 100 recycling receptacles and solar-powered waste compacting units.
  • Offered recyclable or biodegradable packaging at concessions.
  • Unused food was donated to Second Helping, a support agency serving the disadvantaged in South Carolina.
  • Ensured plenty of bicycle racks were available within walking distance of the Harbour Town Clubhouse.

Since 2006, Harbour Town Golf Links has been certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary by Audubon International. Only five percent of U.S. golf courses have this environmental designation.

Harbour Town is home to 30 species of mammals and 133 species of birds.

Come Celebrate Our 3rd Annual Blue Water Day on June 8

Come Celebrate Our Third Annual Blue Water Day on June 8

There are so many urgent causes competing for our attention, water seems to get lost in the mix. So you might wonder: who cares about water? RBC does, and we are celebrating with our third annual RBC Blue Water Day. It turns out that, at some point in their lives, most people have an 'aha' moment about water. So this year, we're asking people to recall that moment, and talk about why water matters to them with their family, friends, clients and on Facebook. Visit our Facebook page to "Show You Care". We hope to have more than 70,000 employees wearing blue as a worldwide symbol of our support for water on June 8.

RBC Named One of Canada's Greenest Employers in 2012

For the fourth consecutive year, RBC has been named one of Canada's Greenest Employers, according to a competition organized by the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers. Now in its sixth year, this designation recognizes employers that lead the nation in making environmental values part of their organizational culture. "We are honoured to be recognized again this year as one of Canada's Greenest Employers," said Sandra Odendahl, RBC's Director of Corporate Environmental Affairs. "Our employees tell us that they care about the

environment and are proud to work for a company that is committed to environmental sustainability. Our employees are also instrumental in helping RBC meet our commitments to reducing our environmental footprint, lending money responsibly, providing our clients with environmental products and services, and promoting environmental sustainability in our communities."
