In February, RBC and Pollution Probe released the Primer on Energy Systems in Canada, a comprehensive but easy-to-read overview of the resources, challenges and opportunities related to energy in Canada. A recent online poll by RBC tested 4,000 Canadians' knowledge about energy. On average, respondents could only correctly answer 40 percent of the questions. For example, only 15.8 percent guessed correctly that energy-related businesses account for four to six percent of Canada's GDP. Furthermore, almost half of respondents believe that the government should be developing a national energy policy.

RBC has made significant strides in improving the efficiency of data storage, resulting in reduced energy use and lower costs. One of the technologies that has helped us optimize our data storage is server virtualization, which stores multiple applications on one physical server. Since the inception of the server virtualization program, we have removed or avoided the purchase of an estimated 6,200 servers representing a 42 percent reduction in servers.
