All-Star Judging Panel to Select Winning Sustainable Design

All-Star Judging Panel to Select Winning Sustainable DesignSubmissions for the 2nd annual Evolve Sustainable Design Competition have been received from across Canada. This year, the Evolve competition challenged Canadian university students to design a net-zero energy and water-wise sports institute. The judging panel, comprised of some of North America's top architects, media and sports industry professionals, includes:

  • Douglas Birkenshaw, Design Principal, B+H Architects
  • Christopher Hume, Architecture Critic, Toronto Star
  • Debbie Low, CEO of Canadian Sport Institute of Ontario
  • Brian Price, RBC Olympian and two time Olympic medalist
  • Dr. John Straube, University of Waterloo
  • Doug Webber, Director Halsall Sustainable Engineering

The winning team will receive a cash prize of $5,000, with runner-up prizes of $3,500 and $1,500. In addition, each winning team will receive a matching donation to their university from the RBC Foundation.

Do You Know a Hometown Hero?Every year, Earth Day Canada (EDC) recognizes Canada's environmental leaders through the Hometown Heroes Award
. This program celebrates the accomplishments of individuals, groups and small businesses that look for local solutions to improve the state of the environment. For the fifth consecutive year, RBC is proud to sponsor the Hometown Heroes Awards, which will be presented at the annual EDC gala in Toronto on June 11. This is your chance to help Canada recognize and celebrate environmental leaders who foster meaningful, long-term community awareness and action. Do you know a Hometown Hero? Nominations are due March 31, 2014.


Looking for a Return on Green

Looking for a Return on GreenMore investors are looking to generate a financial return from businesses tackling important social or environmental challenges. Renewal3 invests in early-growth stage companies in Canada and the U.S. focused on organic food, green products and environmental innovation. Some of the unique businesses in their portfolio include companies that: import and sell fair trade, organic and carbon neutral food products; manufacture organic personal care products that are toxin free; and produce recycled, non-toxic and eco-friendly household goods and cleaning supplies. Renewal3 invests in companies with up to $20 million dollars in annual revenue in sectors traditionally underserved by venture capital funds. The RBC Generator, the impact investing arm of RBC’s Social Finance Initiative, has recently invested $1 million in Renewal3.

RBC Recognized for Leadership in Energy Conservation

RBC Recognized for Leadership in Energy ConservationFor the third consecutive year, Civic Action’s Race to Reduce has recognized RBC for its leadership in energy conservation. RBC has recently received an Energy Champion award for superior industry leadership in energy reduction. Civic Action noted a number of RBC energy saving initiatives such as daytime cleaning, lighting upgrades, green building certifications and employee awareness events that continue to positively influence energy savings. RBC and Bentall Kennedy also received a Team Excellence award for demonstrating active landlord and tenant collaboration in energy reduction at our 800,000 ft2 Meadowvale office in Mississauga, home to RBC Insurance. Launched in 2011, Civic Action’s Race to Reduce challenges Toronto office building landlords and tenants to work together to reduce energy use in participating office buildings by at least 10 per cent over four years.

Earth Hour

RBC will join thousands of citizens and organizations around the world to support Earth Hour on Saturday, March 29 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. local time. Earth Hour is a global lights-out initiative coordinated by the World Wildlife Fund to encourage people and organizations to be part of the solution against climate change.
