Low-Carbon Online Applications

We use approximately 715 megawatt hours of energy per year to operate the primary and backup systems that power our online applications. According to Environment Canada's Interim Guidance on Performance Measures for Greenhouse Gas Emissions, this energy use produces approximately 244 metric tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year. To offset the environmental impact of these emissions, we have purchased high quality carbon offsets – a unit of greenhouse gas emissions validated to have been removed from the atmosphere.

These offsets have been sourced from a Zerofootprint forest restoration project located in the District of Maple Ridge in British Columbia, Canada. The project has planted over 25,000 indigenous Douglas firs, Sitka spruces, Western red cedars, Western hemlocks and Cottonwoods. A third party auditor monitors this restoration project in addition to an independent, qualified greenhouse gas auditor who has validated the carbon offsets using the ISO14064-2 standard. Post-implementation audits for the project are undertaken by an independent Registered Professional Biologist to ensure that the number of trees, species diversity, location and survival have been assessed and reported.
