2009 RBC Wicket Cricket Community Fund Grant Recipients

 


Central Region

The Adastrians Cricket Club of Montreal

The Adastrians Cricket Club is a 2009 RBC Wicket Cricket Community Fund grant recipient. Their mission is to offer youth in the community the opportunity to be involved in the sport of cricket rather than engaging in negative activities. Adastrians was also awarded a 2008 RBC grant and plans to build on its success with the 2009 funds by purchasing additional cricket equipment and engaging more coaches to further expand cricket in the city of Montreal. The Club is aspiring for one of its players to make the Canadian Cricket Team within the next five years.

Cambridge Community Cricket Club

The Cambridge Community Cricket Club is a 2009 RBC Wicket Cricket Community Fund grant recipient. The Club’s mandate is to raise awareness of cricket within the Cambridge community. The RBC funding will be used to help repair the Club’s wickets as well as provide much-needed equipment for youth players. Cricket programs provide the multi-cultural youth of Cambridge an opportunity to be active and learn the sport in a safe, encouraging environment.

Corporation of the Town of New Tecumseth

The Corporation of the Town of New Tecumseth is a 2009 RBC Wicket Cricket Community Fund grant recipient. The town aims to promote a healthy lifestyle by offering children a wide range of programs, to ensure that every child has a chance to participate in an activity they enjoy. The Town of New Tecumseth includes Alliston, Beeton and Tottenham and presently none of these communities offers a cricket program. The RBC grant money will be used to purchase cricket equipment and promote the sport to interested youth who are looking for a new activity to keep fit.

Hamilton and District Cricket League

The Hamilton and District Cricket League (HDCL) is a 2009 RBC Wicket Cricket Community Fund grant recipient. The HDCL was formed in 1921 and is currently the governing body of cricket for the regions of Mississauga, Oakville, Milton, Burlington, Stoney Creek, Hamilton, St. Catharines, Niagara, Welland, Brantford and Cambridge. They aim to promote cricket at a grass-roots level by providing opportunities, infrastructure and conducting youth cricket camps. The HDCL would like to use the RBC funding to engage certified coaches as well as subsidize the costs of participants.

North Star Community Centre

The North Star Community Centre of North York, Ontario, is a 2009 RBC Wicket Cricket Community Fund grant recipient. Their mission is to promote leadership, development and meaningful opportunities for youth while engaging in positive community activities. The Centre offers year-round cricket programs at levels ranging from novice to highly competitive. The RBC grant will be used to engage highly qualified coaches and help with the costs of hosting various cricket tournaments throughout the year.

Park-Extension Youth Organization

Park-Extension Youth Organization (PEYO) of Montreal, Quebec, is a 2009 RBC Wicket Cricket Community Fund grant recipient. PEYO was founded in 1967 with a mission to enhance the life of the Park-Extension community through a variety of age appropriate programs. PEYO plans to use the RBC grant to purchase new cricket equipment and grow its cricket program from one age group of six to 12 year olds to include an older age bracket for 13 to 17 year olds. PEYO’s goal is to have two teams to participate in the Quebec Cricket Federation League in the summer of 2010.

Toujours Ensemble

Toujours Ensemble is a 2009 RBC Wicket Cricket Community Fund grant recipient. The organization was established in Verdun, Quebec, in 1986, as a non-profit organization whose mission is to support young people as they encounter academic, family or social difficulties. They reach approximately 250 kids each year with their programs, tailored to the area’s needs and interests. The RBC grant will be used to introduce cricket during the organization’s “Summer in the parks” program which is a free camp offered to low-income families, for youth seven to 12 years old.

Yorkshire Cricket and Cultural Club

The Yorkshire Cricket and Cultural Club is a 2009 RBC Wicket Cricket Community Fund grant recipient. They are an active member of the Toronto and District Cricket Association. Yorkshire currently has two teams, over 100 registered members, and one member who is part of the Canadian Cricket Team. Yorkshire intentionally holds its practices in the evenings to keep youth away from negative influences. The RBC grant will be used purchase additional cricket equipment and to subsidize the costs of offering cricket programs to youth in the area.

Ottawa Valley Cricket Council – TBC as a grant recipient

The Ottawa Valley Cricket Council is a 2009 RBC Wicket Cricket Community Fund grant recipient. Their mandate is to promote cricket in local schools and in the community. The RBC grant will provide the Council’s junior program with funding to purchase additional cricket equipment and promote the sport through their cricket day camps. They aim to make cricket accessible to all interested youth in the community, regardless of gender or income.

Western Region

Guildford Recreation Centre and Newton Recreation Centre


The Guildford Recreation Centre and Newton Recreation Centre have each been awarded a 2009 RBC Wicket Cricket Community Fund grant. Both Guildford and Newton are anxious to develop the sport of cricket in their culturally diverse communities with the help of a partnership with the Surrey School District. They all share a common goal of creating sustainable cricket programs for youth. Guildford and Newton have earmarked their respective RBC grants to subsidize the costs of running youth summer cricket camps and re-introducing cricket back into the community. They anticipate that the cricket programs will allow children to increase self confidence while building positive relationships with their peers.

Eastern District Cricket Club

The Eastern District Cricket Club is a 2009 RBC Wicket Cricket Community Fund grant recipient. The Club is brand new, founded in 2008 and based out of Chilliwack, BC. With a focus on youth development through local school districts, the Eastern District 'Stags' hope to generate excitement among the local community with junior, social and competitive teams participating throughout the lower mainland. The RBC Wicket Cricket funding is earmarked to develop a coaching program for new youth as well as local teachers to enable schools to help develop the game within their own physical education curriculum.

Guyanese Association of Manitoba Inc.

The Guyanese Association of Manitoba Inc. is a 2009 RBC Wicket Cricket Community Fund grant recipient. The Association was founded in 1978 as a non-profit organization to serve its community with relevant and engaging programming for a variety of ages. They currently have over 40 young cricketers between the ages of five to 16 involved in cricket year-round. They plan to use the RBC grant to expand the reach of cricket programming in the community by purchasing more equipment and promoting the game.

Maple Community Centre – Lions Sports Club

The Maple Community Centre – Lions Sports Club is a 2009 RBC Wicket Cricket Community Fund grant recipient. The Lions Sports Club has been involved in cricket since 1973. In 2006, The Maple Community Centre and Lions Sports Club joined forces to create a year-round cricket program for the community. They are in the process of building a cricket field, to be completed at the end of September, 2009, to help facilitate the expanding program. The RBC funds will contribute towards developing cricket in the community and making the sport more accessible to all interested youth.

Patriots Cricket Club

Patriots Cricket Club is a 2009 RBC Wicket Cricket Community Fund grant recipient. The Club was formed by students who were attending a local area high school. The goal was to offer more competitive cricket to youth in the area. Currently the Club boasts three teams in the well-established Calgary and District Cricket League (CDCL). The Patriots plan to use the RBC grant to subsidize the league fees and equipment costs for youth that otherwise would not have the opportunity to play. The Club prides itself in grooming disciplined players and as a result was awarded the CDCL’s 2008 team sportsmanship award.

SuperStrikers/Windies Youth Cricket Club

SuperStrikers/Windies Youth Cricket Club is a 2009 RBC Wicket Cricket Community Fund grant recipient. The SuperStrikers Club formed in late 2008 as part of Windies Cultural Association, located in Port Moody, BC. Currently the club has18 registered players from six to 12 years old. The Club would like to use the RBC grant to increase awareness and youth involvement with cricket in local schools and in the community. SuperStrikers is also aspiring to use the funding to launch an in-door cricket program during the winter months.
