RBC named one of world's Top 100 Sustainable Companies
TORONTO, January 28, 2005 - RBC
Financial Group has been named one of the world's top 100
sustainable companies, according to a new global business
ranking: the "Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations
in the World." The ranking was unveiled at the World
Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and identified the top
100 companies that are leading the way to a more sustainable
world.
The 'Top 100' companies emerged from a pool of over 2,000
firms, representing such large global indices as the S&P
500, MSCI World, FTSE 350 and Eurostoxx. Companies were selected
on their ability to manage strategic opportunities in new
environmental and social markets.
Companies were rated on such criteria as strategic governance,
environmental initiatives, and human capital/labour relations
practices. Research and analysis was conducted by Innovest,
a leading environmental investment advisory firm with offices
in New York, London and Toronto.
"How companies perform on environmental, social, and
strategic governance issues is having a rapidly-growing impact
on their competitiveness, profitability, and share price performance,"
said Dr. Matthew Kiernan, founder and CEO of Innovest Strategic
Value Advisors. "We congratulate the Top 100 sustainability
companies; we consider each of them to be particularly well-positioned
to capture opportunities in this new world we are all entering."
This honour adds to an already impressive suite of recognition
garnered by RBC for programs and performance related to sustainability/corporate
responsibility.
For example, RBC Financial Group was listed on the Dow Jones
Sustainability Index for the fifth consecutive year, recognizing
the world's financial, social and environmental corporate
leaders. RBC is also listed on the Jantzi Social Index (used
primarily by Canadian investors) and the FTSE4Good Index (used
primarily by European investors). RBC was also recently named
"Canada's Most Respected Corporation" in the annual
KPMG/Ipsos Reid Poll, including topping the poll in the categories
of "Corporate Social Responsibility" and "Corporate
Governance."
In 2004, RBC was among 50 large companies worldwide to be
recognized as leaders in understanding and addressing climate
change issues by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), an initiative
sponsored by 95 leading institutional investors.
