Helping kids enjoy being kids…

RBC donates $100,000 to Janeway Children’s Mental Health Program

The dream of the picture-perfect family is far from the reality experienced by many young Canadians today. Too many children face emotional, social or behavioural challenges, which, if left untreated, can lead to serious difficulties in adulthood.

In Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador, children and families facing challenges often turn to the Janeway Family Centre for assistance. The Janeway’s team of social workers and psychologists treat children and their families using varied interventions and a combination of individual, family and group approaches. They deal with a broad range of issues from parenting concerns to family conflict.

Reaching out further

Newfoundland and Labrador's expansive geography presents unique challenges to people who may live in more remote areas. Currently, children and families who wish to access group treatment services offered by the Janeway Family Center must travel to St. John's. This can involve financial cost, the stress of an extended stay away from home, and the challenge of traveling by air or by boat through all seasons.

Professionals providing mental health treatment services throughout the province frequently inquire about the possibility of accessing Janeway group treatment programs to offer locally. The resources for sharing group treatment programs have been limited – that is until now.

Thanks in part to a $100,000 donation from RBC® , the Janeway Family Centre is developing Reaching Out. They plan to package the successful group programs and offer training to professionals that will enable them to deliver these support services in their home communities throughout the province. Group programs are offered for children aged three to 12, as well as parents of children aged two to 20. Topics include parenting young children and adolescents, children who witness violence, children who have been sexually abused, children of divorce or separation, intergenerational physical abuse and parenting for fathers.

Ensuring success

The Janeway’s Reaching Out program will make these group treatment services more accessible to children and families throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Training sessions will be offered in communities such as Gander, Grand Falls, Corner Brook, Port Aux Basques, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, and Labrador City.

Success of this initiative - as well as the number of group programs that will be offered throughout the province’s health communities - will be measured by professionals from the four health authorities that take part in the training. The ultimate success, though, will be evident in the increased health and well-being of the province’s children and families.
