Inspiration for Donating

RBC’s Giving Segments

Organizations whose work enhances quality of life

In order to help organizations and initiatives make a real difference in the community and the people served, RBC focuses its support on a limited number of giving segments within the community:

Education
Health and Wellness
Social Services
Civic & the Environment
Arts & Culture

Education

Our target for this segment is 35%

Education is one of RBC's highest priorities, with over $13.0 million directed to this area in 2007. We fund programs for pre-K to 12, colleges and universities.
Our Priority Project in this giving segment is the RBC Stay in School Project , which focuses on the following areas

  • After-school programs
  • Literacy programs
  • Math, science and technology programs, especially those geared for elementary and high school students.
  • Post-Secondary Education

Health and Wellness

Our target for this segment is 25%

The health and wellness of local communities and our employees is of vital importance to RBC with over $11.5 million donated in 2007.

Concentration of funding is focused on:

  • Children's Mental Health
  • Community and Children's Hospitals
  • Neurological health issues

Social Services

Our target for this segment is 25%

A range of social services is necessary to address the many needs of a community. Recognizing this, RBC made a corporate donation of over $3.7 million to United Way/Centraide in communities across North America in 2007.

Our emphasis in these areas is service delivery and education.

  • Mental health services, education and awareness
  • Programs assisting underserved populations, in particular new Canadians and Aboriginals.
  • Programs providing active, independent living for senior citizens.

Civic & the Environment

Our target for this segment is 10%

RBC is committed to helping improve the communities in which it has a presence. In particular, donations are targeted to:

  • Programs which address safety issues;
  • Assisting “at risk youth” or disadvantaged individuals develop job skills or start their own business
  • Encouraging home ownership or access to affordable housing.
  • Support environmental initiatives that focus on education and awareness

Arts & Culture

Our target for this segment is 5%

We believe that cultural institutions bring life and excitement to communities and are a vital component of their quality of life. Given the large number of funding opportunities in this area, RBC has established the RBC Emerging Artist Project. In 2007 we invested $433,000 in apprenticeship and internship programs across Canada. Over the last five years, the RBC Foundation has donated more than $4.5 million to support visual arts programs across Canada.

Outside of this priority project RBC provides funding to Arts and Culture in the following ways:

  • Making visual and performing arts accessible to the community at large, especially the disadvantaged and disabled;
  • Promote cultural diversity and heritage awareness;
  • Bringing the arts to rural communities across Canada.
