What is the RBC After-School Grants Program
RBC wanted to direct more of our donations towards education at the elementary and secondary levels (K-12), with a special focus on keeping kids in school. But we're bankers, not experts in community programs or education. So we decided to consult with the experts. An education advisory panel of experts from across Canada was assembled to help us narrow down the field to "After-School Programs". As well, local Community Selection Panels help determine which of the many strong programs from across the country should receive funding each granting year.
RBC After-School Grant recipient programs offer a range of structured, supervised activities that encourage social skills and self-esteem. 40 per cent of the After-School Programs RBC funds report increased academic performance and improved social skills of their participants. Activities such as computer instruction, sports, literacy tutoring, music and art lessons, nutrition guidance, and homework-help provide kids with opportunities to gain an area of competence outside of academics and benefit their self-esteem. Feedback from RBC-funded after-school programs of more than 14,000 children and youth shows that 40 per cent of the programs report increased academic performance and improved social skills of their participants.
Since 1999, RBC has provided $14.8 million in grants to community-based after-school programs that offer learning and skill development opportunities to youth in the hours after classes end for the day.
