After School Grants Program

The school day ends; the learning doesn’t

Helping kids stay in school is a key area of focus for RBC and its employees.

RBC has been funding after-school programs since 1999, with $14.8 million given through 471 grants to 157 different organizations that have helped more than 14,000 children over the past nine years.

To be chosen for a grant, recipients must offer structured supervised activities in an environment that provides what RBC has termed the "3 Ss": safety, social skills and self-esteem.

After-School Grant recipients must provide RBC with semi-annual Evaluation Reports as follow-up and documentation of the progress they are making in providing benefit to their participants. Currently, 40 per cent of the programs report increased academic performance and improved social skills of their participants. The reports also serve as an opportunity for the after school programs to evaluate and track their successes, accomplishments and key learning not just for RBC, but also for after-school program staff and volunteers, as well as parents, other funders and community stakeholders.

Beyond Funding

RBC realizes that money alone cannot create long-lasting change at the community level. So we bring a full range of resources to our After-School Grants Program partnerships.

RBC employees have contributed in significant ways at recipient programs across Canada as one-on-one reading mentors, sport coaches, as well as assisting in other ways such as branch tours, fundraising, field trip chaperoning and board representation. In November 2000 RBC hosted the first-ever national After-School Program Conference. More than 60 after-school program providers from across Canada participated in the conference and shared in an unprecedented opportunity to meet, network and exchange best practices. Since the conference, RBC has hosted regional conference calls and in-person meetings to facilitate recipient networking and the transfer of knowledge and best practices on an on-going basis.
