Children to benefit from $325,000 donation from RBC

Gift to Lakeridge Health Foundation will benefit children's mental health and high-needs projects

May 8 2013 - Just in time for National Children’s Mental Health Week, Lakeridge Health in Durham, ON is celebrating a major donation to its mental health program for children and youth. The RBC Foundation has committed $325,000 to Lakeridge Health, of which $250,000 will support the hospital’s Child, Youth and Family Program.

“There’s incredible demand in our community for children’s mental health services,” says Kevin Empey, president and CEO of Lakeridge Health. “Every month, about 55 children are referred to our therapy services for the first time – and that’s only one part of what we do.”

Lakeridge Health’s Child, Youth and Family Program provides care to children aged 5 to 18 who are suffering from a serious mental health issue. The program will receive about 10,000 visits this year for crisis support, in-hospital care and outpatient therapy.

“Donors like RBC give us the financial support to grow, improve and provide care to more kids. Together we can ensure strong, local health care for the families who rely on us,” says Empey.

In addition to funding children’s mental health, RBC is donating $75,000 for high-priority projects at Lakeridge Health’s Bowmanville, Port Perry and Whitby sites, including:

  • a paediatric room in Lakeridge Health’s Bowmanville Emergency Room;
  • an infant resuscitator for the New Life Centre at Lakeridge Health’s Port Perry site; and
  • five new hospital beds for Lakeridge Health’s Whitby site.

“Yet again RBC has demonstrated their tremendous commitment to our community with a donation that’s going to make a difference for kids and families here in Durham Region,” says Bob Baker, CEO, Lakeridge Health Foundation.

RBC has a long history of supporting many organizations and community-based hospital programs that operate in this priority area of Children's Mental Health. In 2012, through the RBC Children’s Mental Health Project, RBC donated $5,500,000 to almost 150 organizations across Canada.

“RBC is proud to make this commitment to Lakeridge Health's Child, Youth and Family Program,” says Travis Capes, regional vice president, RBC. “This gift will help ensure that kids in the Durham region facing mental health issues have access to programs and services giving them hope for a brighter future."
