RBC Branch Manager from Ranking Inlet ventures out by snowmobile to serve clients.
Last spring, Stan Anderson, RBC branch manager in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut and account manager Gavin Gee ventured out on a snowmobile to the hamlet of Whale Cove. Located on the west coast of Hudson Bay, approximately 80 km south of Rankin Inlet, they hosted an open house with the community of Whale Cove to teach them about RBC Remote Banking services.
“We hear it all the time. That it would be nice to have a branch in our region. As an alternative we show people in these northern communities how they can access their accounts and do their banking remotely,” says Anderson.
Remote Banking, introduced by RBC in 2009, makes it easier for Aboriginal Canadians living in remote areas to access personal banking services with the same convenience and ease as individuals living in more urban locations. By requesting a Remote Banking Account Open Client Kit, clients can apply for a client card which provides them access to online banking, telephone banking, ATM’s etc.
Few roads, expensive flights and unpredictable weather has made it difficult to travel to these remote communities but the Rankin Inlet branch has made a commitment to visiting Aboriginal communities in the Kivalliq region regularly. Stan says they’ll also be going to Chesterfield Inlet, Repulse Bay, and Coral Harbour
“There is always a sense of pride and accomplishment when we visit remote communities - they go out of their way to welcome us,” adds Anderson. “We use these trips as opportunities to educate individuals on banking and provide financial advice. We appreciate that many individuals in these communities may be opening their very first bank account. It is always very exciting to be a part of this experience.” RBC branches in Iqaluit and Cambridge Bay also bring banking to several remote communities in their surrounding areas.
